ZINGIBER ZERUMBET:

“This clump forming, upright species is native to India and Southeast Asia. It has narrow, 12 inch long leaves. On separate tall stems are overlapping greenbracts aging to red, surrounding white or gold flowers. The rhizomes are bitter to eat, but can be used in potpourri. ”

I remembered the nest of harvester ants. Very nice.
My questions
Does the infloresence appear green when young and red when old?
Dont the flowers give appearence of orchid flower?

The inflorescence is green when young and then turns to red gradually.
If you press the round thing, it oozes out the fragrant nectar and water.

Yes Curcuma does look like a bit of Orchid because of the rostellum like structure. But there is no pollinia in Curcuma, there are proper anthers.

In the series of evolution are Orchid near any where of Curcuma?
I dont know being non botanist. But appearence is very close.

Actually it is more close to Asparagaceae according to recent findings. I hope you know that Liliaceae is now in another group Liliales and Amaryllidaceae in Asparagales.
Its complicated but in simple words, Orchidaceae is more close to Asparagaceae and Amaryllidaceae and Zingiberaceae is more close to Commelinaceae. and both are in two different groups (scientifically speaking Orders).

It si not coming under the genus Curcuma. It is Zingiber zerumbet commonly known as ‘Shampoo ginger’

I saw this plant for the first time at Tezpur (Assam). In 2004 I saw it again at Binnaguri (West Bengal). I brought a plant from that place and planted here at Cooch Behar. The plant is doing well. Attaching a collage of Zinziber zerumbet.
