Known to be distributed in Myanmar (Bago, Mon, Tenasserim and Yangon), western and northern Thailand and it also occurs in the Andaman Islands (India). May also occur in mainland India but there are no confirmed records as yet. The extent of occurrence is estimated at 96,000 km². Found in limestone areas in semi-deciduous woodland, from 50- 700 m asl.
This is one of the commercially most exploited ginger species for the cut flower industry in Thailand. Rhizomes are sold by thousand in flower markets all over Thailand as well as being sent abroad. While many originate from cultivation in nurseries wild populations are also exploited.
