Garay from Hong Kong (from Thailand): Seidenfadenia mitrata (Rchb.f.) Garay, Bot. Mus. Leafl. 23: 204 (1972). Synonym: Aerides mitrata Rchb.f., Bot. Zeitung (Berlin) 22: 415 (1864). Family: Orchidaceae Distribution: Myanmar to Thailand Current pic taken in the live collections from Thailand. Very strangely, the species name “mitrata” sounds very HINDI but actually it means ‘turbaned’. I imagine why!!! Very beautiful, … I think the name is very apt as there is a cap (turban!) on the column head. And the flowers look like tiny birds…do they mimic any pollinators?! Refrences: |
