ID help for orchid:
This is the most common orchid in our campus.
Location: Makunda Christian Hosptial campus, Karimganj District, Assam
Date: 18th April 2011
Equipment: Nikon D300s with Sigma 150-500mm OS lens

– The picture is very beautiful, so it tempted me to find name of it.
I think it is a Papilionanthe species, most probably P. teres.

– .., after heavy physical exertion in order to get new vigor this orchid is used externally by local people of your area. You can also ask old TBAs of your area about its use in post natal care.

– This is for sure Papilionanthe teres, but I am not sure if this is wild or Ornamental. There are many hybrid available for this in market in Assam.

PAPILIONANTHE TERES:
If you visit Northern part of Bengal at this time of the year you will be welcome by an orchid commonly known as CYLINDRICAL VANDA (Papilionanthe teres). You just can’t miss it, as it is present on almost all big trees and in profusion. Attaching an image of this beautiful orchid.

This was shot from Pelling in cultivation and was also seen in wild near Siliguri..
I could get its id as Papilionanthe teres…. please suggest..

Cylindrical Vanda is Papilionanthe teres (not Dendrobium moschatum as it was mentioned in earlier post )

Yes it is Papilionanthe teres. But the other one seems like chlorophytum

At this time of the year Papilionanthe teres ( CYLINDRICAL VANDA ) is in bloom throughout North Bengal.

They are seen on all type of trees. But once they are on Mango tree or Jarul tree it gives special effect.
On Jarul tree the flower of the orchid merges with flowers of Jarul.
