Is this Cananga odorata? Family: Annonaceae.

Captured in pune 10Apr 2010 potted plant procured from Empress garden nursery.

I have seen this plant in Kolkata, in a horticulture garden but didn’t knew the name thanks for the sharing the photos and name

Cananga odorata I have never seen. Instead I know Artabotrys. This is a new addition to my knowledge. I’v recently referred the flora and could see the detail of this plant. I think it smell like Artabotrys odoratissimus.

This is Cananga odorata (ylang ylang tree) but smaller in size… People from Mumbai…There is one cananga odorata in Jijamata udyan,
Byculla… check out if that is flowering now..

This is Cananga kirkii, a shrub usually cultivated in gardens.

Cananga kirkii doesn’t seem to be currently accepted name. I think this dwarf variety is called Cananga odorata var. fruticosa

A small shrub, hardly three feet tall, full of very fragrant lemon colored flowers.

On searching the net, found it to be the dwarf variety of Cananga odorata, posted by me earlier.

Yes for me. I checked the Artabotrys odoratissimus also in the family Annonaceae, which is a woody climber with hooks formed at the middle of the flower (and later fruit) and confused with ylang ylang. The photos sent by you do not resemble this plant as your is a small tree(shrub) and not a woody climber, photos do not indicate any type of hook. Further more the type of leaf in C.odoprata has a dripping end (point). I have seen both these plants in Chennai.

Differences between Cananga odorata Cananga odorata var fruticosa (Cananga kirkii):

How can we differentiate between the Cananga odorata and var fruticosa apart from the size? Especially as saplings, is there any easy way to ID them?

The main difference is size: var. odorata being a tree 3-6 m tall whereas var. fruticosa is a shrub only 1-2 m tall.

So, I guess a sapling cant be told apart by lay person… unless one does DNA fingerprinting!!
