Perennials; culms 30-120 cm tall; tufted; nodes glabrous. Leaves 15-25 x 3-4 cm, elliptic, distinctly petiolate, glabrous; sheath keeled, glabrous; ligule a fimbriate membrane. Panicle 20-40 cm long, with distinct small clusters of racemes. Spikelets 10 x 2-3 mm, lanceolate; lower glume 3 x 1.5 mm, ovate, acute, 5-nerved; upper glume 4-5 x 2 mm, 5-nerved; fertile lemma 7 x 3 mm, 7-nerved, cuspidate; palea 6 x 2 mm, hyaline, 2-nerved; stamens 3; anthers 2 mm long; ovary obovoid; stigma plumose; sterile lemmas several, above the fertile lemma, 3 x 1.5 mm, terminated into bristles, epaleate.
