    sunbird with kigelia pinnata:
i found this beautiful moment at baramati visit. a Sunbird collecting nectar from kigelia pinnata

    – The bird looks like a female of Purple Rumped Sunbird. The plant is actually Kigelia africana (syn: Kigelia pinnata). It happens to be a bat pollinated tree and it is pollinated during evenings. I imagine if the sunbird female was lured by something inside the flower!!

    Kigelia africana:
This Sausage Tree I photographed @ Empress garden, Pune. Habitat- Planted
    Dated- 12 June 11.

It is most often found fallen on ground because the flowers bloom at night and bats pollinate it. And by the weight of these bats, the corolla usually fall off leaving the gynoecium on the floral stalk.

… sausage tree, Kigelia africana ?

…, Sausage tree’s fruits look like cucumber, this one looks different.
Attaching pics of sausage tree and this one .

I think … identification is correct. Such variations in fruits are seen. For e.g. check the link
    http://nature.jardin.free.fr/kigelia_africana.html

also the angle of camera to the fruit will make it look short and stumpy, not longish if the maker is kind-a standing under the fruit!!!

I am also in favor of Kigellia africana.
    Bignoniaceae

Bignoniaceae Week :: Kigelia africana, (Lam.) Benth. <=> Sausage Tree – Bangalore – RA :
The blood-red flowers of the sausage tree bloom at night on long, ropelike stalks that hang down from the limbs of this tropical tree. The fragrant, nectar-rich blossoms are pollinated by bats, insects and sunbirds in their native habitat.

The mature fruits dangle from the long stalks like giant sausages. They may be up to two feet long and weigh up to 6.8 kg. The flowers are seen hanging from the tree while they haven’t opened. After they open, they fall off quite soon.
The fruit, while not palatable for humans, is popular with hippos, baboons, and giraffes.
Mainly grown as a curiosity and ornamental, both for its beautiful deep red flowers and its strange fruit.

Kigella pinnata from Victoria memorial grounds Kolkata
These are planted planned gardens, so this is obviously planted, about 40 years ago… Well couldn’t be naturalized, its native of Africa…
But what pulled us to this tree was this huge fruit , all wrinkled up and when we managed to open it, it was rotting with lots of seeds inside… not one of them looked healthy..
And the flowers .. smelled sort of… not pleasantfallen of course … they open at night and fall off in the morning…
The green canopy is dense, looking up one sees these whorls of leaves…
Bark is smoothish, greyish and being Bengal hosts moss and lichen…

    Nice depiction …

Bignoniaceae Week : : UD 008 : : Kigelia pinnata Magnificent old tree from the Hort:
There is this magnificent old tree at the edge of the grand lawn at the horticulture garden Kolkata
Kigella pinnata A Magnificent old tree from the Hort
This tree is about 60 years old or may be older…
By Novermber its bare almost , all leaves fall off, leaving a startling appearance with these thisk big elongated pods still hanging on…Fallen pods liter the lawn
Each about 8 to 10 inches long from this tree (the one at Victoria memorial makes pods about 12 to 14 inches long, sometimes even longer)
The pods here were so fresh the day I took these pictures, the surface fuzz was still fresh and velvety to the touch..
Does anyone know why would a hard walled seed pod need to grow fuzz on its surface???

Interesting fruits…We call these Balam Khira

… nice photo set, especially the pods’ pictures. Many thanks for sharing.
Inadvertent typo in name — just that this post appears in future search – putting the correct spelling here:
Kigelia pinnata (Jacq.) DC. … syn. of Kigelia africana (Lam.) Benth.

medium ht tree with fruits. no flowers were seen. Kindly validate if this tree is Kigelia africana

Yes it is. The flowering is over and the tree is in fruiting stage at most places in Pune.
Kigellia africana also called as ‘Sausage tree’ due to the huge sausage like fruits. (Seen here)
    Family : Bignoniaceae.

Yes … It is African Sausage. U seem to have missed the flowers in last month. Bright maroon coloured flowers of this tree bloom at night. Look very beautiful but smells very foul. U can photograph them early morning around 6.00-6.30 am. Locally in marathi they are known as “वाघूळ फूल” as the pollination is carried out by bats. I m attaching a flower image taken near my house in Versova, Mumbai.

Many thanks for your msg. The pix of the flowers you have captured are really very beautiful. Nice name in Marathi too. The label to the image says Hatti Ladoo Jhaad. does it mean हत्ती लाडू झाड़ ? any particular reason for this name? Thanks for all the info about this tree

Thanks … for the name वाघूळ फूल (vaghul phul) and thanks … for discussing हत्ती लाडू झाड़ (hatti ladoo jhaad).

The Hatti Ladoo Jhad name seems to be derived from the almost foot long fruits that it bears. It remembles like the ragi balls fed to domesticated elephants.

Yes …. Searching of names of plants leads us to search for HOWs and WHYs … almost always very interesting sessions.
And sometimes though the names (English transliterated) are found in various resources – they are not found mentioned in dictionaries, they are lesser known to people … thus – getting them in native script gets difficult.

I saw this plant for the first time at Pachmarhi in 1975.
Hindi name JHAD FANOOS is quite appropriate as the arrangement of flowers resembles chandelier.
Attaching two collages  of this plant. Forest department must have planted these on the road side of Cooch Behar.
some of them are blooming now. Common name is SAUSAGE TREE.

very nice. its interesting that its growing by a roadside.  the fruits grow to be very big, (see below)
I wonder what do these neighborhood folks do with the fruits or seeds?
we have several in the kolkata area
one is famous one in victoria memorial grounds on the northeast corner lawn
another in the large army garden enclave in the salt lake area
another i think i saw in the horticulture garden and of course the shibpur botanical garden
i have not yet seen it outside of a deliberate planting, at least in Calcutta
the fully grown fruits get very big (the leaf here is from a nearby other tree)
    thats a size 8 shoe = 9.5 inches long
    in victoria memorial garden lawn
i believe its a fruit from the year before
the tree still only had buds for that current year

It also called balamkhira and hakims say that Balamkhira bana de pet ko heera. It is used for stomach ailments

way to go. thanks for telling us. how is it used? do you know?
    the seeds or the bark?

Its seeds are dried and grind to make powder. This powder is used with luke warm water.

Most probably a planted tree, must be Kigelia africana (Lam.) Benth., the sausage tree or cucumber tree.
