Oryza sativa indica is the cultivated rice grown In India.
Rice has known to be cultivated since 10000 BC. The International Rice Genebank – the world’s largest collection of rice diversity – contains more than 112,000 different types of rice including species of wild rice, the ancestors of rice, traditional and heirloom varieties, and modern varieties. In India Chhattisgarh is known for rice diversity and considered as one of the secondary centres of diversity with a collection of 18541 accessions.

Thanks … for the inauguaration. It is very important for us to know that the major food crops belong to Poaceae. Kindly throw light on other cultivated rice species and its taxonomy. For. eg, difference between the awned basmati rice, red and black grained rice, etc. Does the modern taxonomists consider O.glaberrima, O.nivara, etc. as species different from O.sativa? And would also like to know about the taxonomic status of introduced species like O.breviligulata, O.brachyantha, O.grandiglumis, O.latifolia, O.australiensis and the multigrained rice O.plena. Also would like to know more about O.jeyporensis.
Thank you … O. glabarrima, O.nivara, O. longistaminata etc are different and called as wild rices. Basically we use them for introgression of stress genes. Let me see if I can source some images of the wild rice species. Taroari Basmati photos I do have
