Corm 1-6 cm across. Leaflets 7-12, 15-25 x 5-7 cm, lanceolate, apex acuminate; nerves many, close, parallel, forming an intramarginal vein, prominent, glabrous; petiole to 70 cm long, 1-3 cm thick, brownish. Peduncle thick, smaller than the petiole; spathe 10-22 cm long, tube 5-15 cm long, 1-3.5 cm broad, with thick greenish brown streaks; limb ovate, apex curved down, finely acuminate, green with brown streaks. Spadix 11-15 cm long, clavate at apex, female flowers many in lower 1-3 cm long; neuter flowers filiform, simple or bifurcate, to 1 cm long. This is commonly seen in the shades of wet forest fringes (roadsides and trails). I cannot take detailed photographs of flowers. I observed the leaves to be of about 25 cm across. The size of spathe ranges 15-20 cm (and spadix not more than 12 cm) Leaves with radiate leaflets (uniformly spreading from centre) Location: Kodanad, Nilgiris, TN Alt.: 1995 m asl Date: 20 June 2013 That is a form of the widespread and variable Arisaema leschenaultii. It is distributed throughout the southern states (Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka and the most common Arisaema in S India. The form on the pictures is very close to the form of the holotype that was collected near Ooty. Local name I think would be “kidaran”.
