Would appreciate if someone would identify this shrub/tree and its flower/fruit. This was photographed in a nursery in Delhi. The shrub/tree had a sweet perfume. I am familiar with this smell and this tree but am unable to place it or identiy it.

We had a couple of these, sadly, I had to remove them as it was damaging my expensive drying yard. The roots were growing so large
that it was lifting my concrete drying yard. Before they were removed, I used to enjoy seeing the Malabar grey hornbills enjoying the ripe
fruits early in the morning with their cacophony of sounds. I will plant them (have quite a few saplings a little away from the drying
yard so that they would once again attract these birds. The tree grows very fast.
The sencond and third pictures are showing some discoloration and I think it is due to lack of Phosphorus.

This plant at a popular resort called “Kshanbhar Vishranti” near Karnala Bird Sanctuary. The second and third photos were on a dry day, shows typical soft red soil settled on the plant leaves, as is seen on plants lining roads on Western Ghats.
Many thanks …, you may be correct about lack of phosphorous. However afraid that my camera settings of exposure (to tackle low diffused light owing to translucent acrylic roof) may have brought about some unreal colours to the leaves.

I was looking for the fruit of A. hexapetalus and came across these two structures. Which one is the fruit? And if one is the fruit, what is the other one?

It is a type of Aggregate fruit from single flower. Image 3020 has one fruit. Image 3019 is just a receptacle and all fruits were fallen down.

I was familiar with Artabotrys hexapetalus in my school days. We knew it as KANTHALI CHAMPA (MADAN MAST). A few days back I collected a mature larva of Tailed Jay butterfly from this plant along with a twig. In due course of time pupa was formed. When the pupa was 11 days old a beautiful butterfly was released. I was witness to this wonderful journey. Attaching a collage of this journey.

Vibrant picture and nice work dear …, both Malayalam and English names are correct. But only the true name is മോതിരവള്ളി mothiravalli. Other names are related to dancing attitudes or related with dancing or female dancer.

I agree that other than “മോതിരവള്ളി mothiravalli”, all other names give a hint of sensuousness, but in no way mean any vulgar feelings. These names are found not only in Malayalam, but in several languages of India. The names reflect and praise the extremely pleasant fragrance of the flowers.

Yes, it doesn’t have any vulgarity. But other Indian languages these has different meanings when compared to Malayalam words.
