This small shrub is commonly grown as house plant in shaded locations in California. Any idea about identity?

Aucuba japonica, the spotted laurel from the family Garryaceae

Yes … You are really versatile. When I first came to this place I photographed and passed it off as some Codiaeum species. It is only when I saw its opposite leaves, I doubted this to be something different, and finally identified it as Aucuba japonica as you rightly said. This particular cultivar is known as ‘Variegata’ Gold Dust (formerly Aucuba japonica var. variegata cultivar ‘Gold Dust’).
