Culms slender, rigid, obtusely 3-quetrous, erect, to 65 cm. Leaves shorter or longer than culms, narrowly linear, channelled or margins involute, to 0.4 cm wide; margins scabrid, sheaths brownish, fibrous. Inflorescence spicate, pyramidal to oblong, to 3 cm; rachis short. Lower bracts foliaceous, narrow-linear, overtopping, membranous, margined at base, upper ones much reduced, non-sheathing; bracteoles elongate, filiform, to 8 cm. Spikelets ovoid to subglobose, 5-14, androgynous with a few staminate flowers towards the apex, lower few distant, others crowded, sessile, to 0.5-2 x 0.4-0.8 cm. Glumes ovate, acute, cuspidate or shortly awned, translucent, greenish yellow, to 0.35 cm long; midrib 3-nerved, sometimes excurrent into a mucro. Stamens 3. Utricle ovoid, plano-convex, narrowly winged, subabruptly beaked, to 0.4 cm; beak 2-fid, margin serrulate. Style-base not thickened; stigmas 2. Nut suborbicular, biconvex, pale brown, stalked, to 0.15 cm.
