It is native to northern Baja California and the western United States (California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona). The plant is considered a noxious weed in parts of the Pacific Northwest.[4][5] Centromadia pungens is an herb up to 120 cm (48 inches) tall. It produces arrays of numerous yellow flower heads with both ray florets and disc florets.[6][7][8]

Attachments (2) Centromadia pungens Common names: Common spikeweed, common tarweed, Family: Asteraceae Native of California, a small tufted herb with linear spiny leaves and about 2 cm across yellow radiate heads. Photographed from Fremont, California. This is very close to the plant I had posted earlier from Fremont a couple of years ago. Could you kindly have a look? Centromadia Species for sure. Great to see a California native plant on this egroup! This was formerly Hemizonia pungens until Jepson Manual 2 revised it to Centromadia. One of the few flowering annuals during California’s dry summers. I see it where I live in San Jose in Lake Cunningham Park.
