Echinops ¿ sphaerocephalus ?
Dear friends,
This plant standing just about 50 cms or so, found growing on steep slope of hill, covered with semi-evergreen forest, with newly formed flower-heads, which I was assuming to be E. echinatus, is being identified as E. sphaerocephalus as there are no signs of spines on the flower head.
I think the flower head is yet very immature to show spines. Please help with your thoughts.

Above posted plant is been identified as Echinops sphaerocephalus L. by … at facebook.
To me, it looks like Maharashtra flora does not have this species listed.
I went through eFI’s Echinops echinatus page. While most of the images showed flower heads with spines projecting beyond flowers, those in following posts do not show so:
- Narendra Joshi ji’s post – Satara
- Prashant’s post – Raigad, Pune
- Pravin Kawale ji’s post – Rajgad,Pune
- Alka Khare ji’s post – Saputara
Please validate the above posts for the species echinatus OR sphaerocephalus.
I wish many validating comments are put here.
Thanks, …, for the new species.
Yes, I agree with you as per images, references and details at newly created page at Echinops sphaerocephalus
Thanks to … for resurfacing his post to highlight the new species researched by Sushant More and his team.
Here is Sushant’s article about the new species … Echinops sahyadricus sp. nov. (Asteraceae: Cardueae), from the northern Western Ghats, Maharashtra, India … the article has restricted access.
As pointed earlier in this post, following posts are affected as this new species …
Posted in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2017 and published as new species in 2020 : 1 post by 1 author.
Posted in 2010 in Pravin Kawale ji, in 2013 by Narendra Joshi ji, in 2014 by Prashant Awale ji and in 2017 by Alka Khare ji and in 2019 by Dinesh Valke ji in efloraofindia, is now published as Echinops sahyadricus Sushant More, Fabio Conti & Harshal S. Bhosale in Oct.’2020 as per details herein.
This again shows the importance of efloraofindia not only to the layman but also for the taxonomists. Hundreds of such wonders are still hidden in its treasure trove.
