Shrub or small tree about 2-3 m tall, young parts brown pubescent. Leaves simple, alternate, narrow obovate-elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 24-40 x 7-14 cm across, base acute or rounded, margin entire, apex caudate or acuminate, coriaceous, dark green, glabrous above, paler glaucous except on brown pubescent on the midrib and veins beneath, lateral veins 15-20 on either side of the midrib, almost straight, anastomosing near the margins, to form a continuous wavy intramarginal veins, impressed above, slightly prominent on the veins and midrib beneath, reticulate rather strong but nearly open, petiole canaliculated, brown pubescent, about 1-1.5 cm long. Flowers bisexual, usually solitary, axillary, slightly drooping, creamy white, about 1.5-2 cm across, pedicels pubescent, about 1 cm long, bracts basal, few, Sepals 3, broadly ovate, somewhat triangular, base united, apex acute, veins prominent, persistant, pubescent, about 8-15 x 7-10 mm across. Petals 6 in 2 series, subequal, outer petals, oblong-lanceolate, slightly clawed at the base, apex acuminate, distinct midrib, thick, creamy white, pubescent both outside and inside, about 3-4 x 1-1.5 cm across, inner petals shorter and smaller, somewhat triangular or forming a triquetrous cone, connate on top, brown pubescent outside. Stamens many, linear oblong, closely packed, about 3 mm long, anthers distant, dorsally fixed, connectives pubescent, acute on the top. Carpels many, linear oblong, pubescent, about 3 mm long, style cylindrical, stigma bifid. Ripe carpels, many, oblong, apex mucronate, about 1.5 cm long, on a much elongated torus.

Riparian evergreen forests in shady places near streams, altitude of about 500-900 ft.

Pl help me identifying this plant from Arunachal Pradesh

else near to it in Fissistigma genus


Many thanks for digging deep into the ID of this plant. I’ll go as per your suggestion.


I think its more likely to be a species of Goniothalamus. I don’t have access to north eastern floras but I will check it out and let you know.

Looks closer to Goniothalamus simonsii Hook. f. & Thomson  as per GBIF– specimen
I think it’s a bit different from Goniothalamus sesquipedalis (Colebr. ex Wall.) Hook.f. & Thomson as per GBIF.
