Location: Jharkhand Distribution: India Note: This has one of the worst smell you can ever come across in such a beautiful flower. Taxonomically this taxa is very controversial but we have a very good explaination in Orchids of Orissa by S. Misra and I prefer to stick with that.
Gibsonii is to commemorate the name in honor of Alexander Gibson (1800–1867) was a Scottish surgeon and botanist who worked in India. Foetida is for bad smell of the flower.
The other variety, H. gibsonii var. gibsonii is supposed to have good smell.
What was the explaination by S. Mishra as mentioned by u? Dr. Misra has based the differentiation on the basis of the size of the lobes of petals. . ORCHIDACEAE Juss. Unfortunately without understanding the species Kew treats this as synonym of Habenaria foliosa which is not true. By mistake You put furcifera here and on the image of furcifera you put gibsonii var. foetida………………..

I would suggest to check few things:
1. I DONT THINK THIS PLANT IS HABENARIA FOLIOSA, RATHER THIS IS HABENARIA GIBSONI VAR FOETIDA. H. GIBSONI AND H. FOLIOSA ARE TWO DISTINCT PLANTS.
2. STUDY MORE BUT IN THE WILD AS IN CAPTIVITY ITS NOT A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
3. YOU MUST KNOW THE FLORAL MORPHOLOGY OF HABENARIA AND PRESENT IT IN THE ARTICLE SO AS TO UNDERSTAND WHERE EXACTLY STIGMA IS LOCATED. I WOULD SAY LOWER INNER PART OF STIGMA WOULD NOT BE A GOOD PLACE FOR THE POLLENS TO GET STICK TO. HABENARIA HAVE LONG STIGMATIC LOBES AND THE MOST FRONTAL PART OF MOST STICKY.
4. ITS VERY INTERESTING THAT BOTH MOTH AND BUTTERFLY VISIT THE FLOWER WHICH NEEDS MORE DETAILED STUDY INCLUDING MALE POLLINATION SUCCESS, FEMALE POLLINATION SUCCESS, FRUITING SUCCESS ETC. WRITE A NEW MANUSCRIPT BASED ON ALL THESE AND I AM SURE IT WILL GO INTO VERY HIGH PROFILE JOURNAL.
5. IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO GC-MS THEN TRY TO ANALYSE THE FRAGRANCE AND THEN ASK SOME ENTOMOLOGIST TO CHECK THE INSECT AS WHAT THEY GET ATTRACTED TO.
Trust me, putting all these together can get your article into journals like The New Phytologist.

No … I did not sniff it… and it didnt occurr to me at that point of time…. Wondering what this could be…. It was the only plant in the vicinity where it was found… Please examine and place it. It is Habenaria gibsonii. Thanks … One thing I am sure, it was not offensive when I went near the plant close enough to take some macros. There was nothing in the air. Any foul smell would have been registered in my mind involuntarily…! Though Kew considers Habenaria gibsonii and foliosa as conspecific, I think they are different. Even gibsonii has two varieties. They both smell very differently. have long been confused with this. But to me this plant looks very much like Habenaria gibsonii.
I am in delhi right now. Will try to dig more and find out the different between two. I assume difference lies in the flower especially in the lobes of lateral petals.

Habenaria foliosa var. foetida (Blatt. & McCann) Bennet; Habenaria foliosa var. gibsonii (Hook.f.) Bennet. This synonymy is perfectly wrong. All the names according to KEW. I have no much more idea about the species because I don’t see the live specimen till now. I know this species only from literature. There are mistakes on Kew list, so dont worry. Habit: Herb. Habenaria digitata Kindly have a re-look into the ID of this orchid with reference to my another upload TSP-OCT2016-16-453 where in the plant is identified as Habenaria gibsonii. Both the plants appear strikingly similar and were found in the same locality…! No this is also not digitata. I think this may also be Habenaria gibsoni var. gibsoni as per discussions at Identification??????? This is again a bit strange looking, but still Habenaria gibsonii var. foetida. . Habenaria gibsonii var. foetida–Amboli Tour:: NS August 2022 (16): 6 images. Very nice and pretty. Soon I will change the name of this and people will be surprised to know that this species was believed to be endemic but then how far it has been found under different names!!! .
