Habit: herb, standing about 25 – 30 cm Habitat: under cover of large trees, among ground cover of other grass and herbs Altitude: about 1900ft (580m) asl Most of its leaves grow close to ground (about 4 – 5), and appear spread on ground. About 1 or 2 smaller leaves are found above ground. The flower is about 15 mm across. at Bhimbetka rock shelters on 20 SEP 13
first two photos are cropped versions This is Habenaria plantaginea. I was strongly thinking so. I discouraged myself from guessing because the spur in this case were not as long as those I have at Kas sighting !! Thank you very much for the ID. Dont worry, he must have washed his spur with bad detergent and hence it got shrunk :P… This plant takes a lot of time to flower as it flowers almost towards the end of peak rainy season. If it rains normally the plant grows normally and if suddenly there is no rain for lets say 1 week then temperature rises and hence flowers open before time.

Attachments (6) It is my pleasure to present few images of Habenaria plantaginea (Orchidaceae) Habit: Herb Habitat: Wild, terrestrial, deciduous forest, amidst grass Sighting: Near Hassan, Karnataka, about 900 msl Date: 23-09-2016 Yes sir this is indeed Habenaria plantaginea but the habitat is so different and very late flowering too. I have always seen this plant inside Sal forests usually in shade and never close to grasses. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Habenaria species: – Kindly refer the .pdf attached here. – So the spur is 1.5-3 times longer than ovary according to santapau & Kapadia. – The spur in your plant too appears almost 3cm. Check the specimen with the key. Sub-radical leaves should be the characteristic feature to sort down easily. “sepals less than 5mm; stems to 30cm; Lip much longer than sepals, with a linear midlobe and broad oblique sidelobes of same length; spur green, 15-25mm, longer than ovary (with pedicel); Fl- Nov Dec” — description as per An Excursion Flora of Central TN by K.M Matthew, 1991 – I have checked it with the description available in “Orchids of Nilgiris by Joseph”. The spur is nearly equal to the length of the ovary, which is about 1 cm only. According to his description spur is considerably longer than ovary, and the bracts are smaller than ovary, which is in contrast almost equal to the length of the ovary in my plant. Other features are almost similar. Since I didn’t had a closer look, can not make a decision now. In – read the type description in Genera and Species of Orchidaceous Plants by Lindley. It means, “SPUR ARCHED, FILIFORM, PENDULOUS, BEAKED AND LONGER THAN OVARY“. Habenaria plantaginea Lindl.: ID is correct for the enclosed link.
