Attached is a flower that bloomed in my terrace garden (in South Delhi) just yesterday (1.4.09). Would appreciate the id.

It is Neomarica gracilis

I am surprised to see that Walking Iris (as Neomarica gracilis is
commonly called) is growing in Delhi. I was under the impression that it grows only in cooler places.

Appears to be Neomarica gracilis posted earlier by some from Delhi and Munnar.

NEOMARICA GRACILIS
Apostle’s Iris
From the Iris family comes this Neomarica with sword shaped leaves and fragrant flowers. The delicate flowers last only a day but the plant continues to form new blooms for long periods of time during late spring months. Makes also an excellent houseplant.
This is not a water Iris, be careful not to overwater. Neomarica gracilis is a type of walking Iris. Once the flower is spent, the stem that it was born on lays to the ground and from that a new plant is formed. For that reason it is said to be walking across your garden.
You can divide plants and plant them in new locations.

This is Walking Iris or Apostle’s Iris from
Family : Iridaceae.

IRIS:
I was in Kashmir during the summer of 1975. You see lots of flowers of different colour and shape at that time of the year. One such flower was Iris (of course, I did not know the identity of this flower at
that time.). I was at Chail during 1979-81. There I saw Iris of different colours. One particular Iris I saw in bloom at Tezpur in 2002. I got a sample of that species in our garden and it is in bloom now. I don’t know the
scientific name of this species. Attaching images of the flower. You may like it.

Iris for Common & Botanical ID – 141211 – RK: (mixed thread): 3 correct images as above.
Pic taken at a friend’s garden, in Bangalore on 25-11-11 at 3pm.
This is a small variety – about 11/2 ‘ tall – the flower is about 31/2″ across. Lasts for a single day – wilts in the evening. Was growing in a pot – flowering all around the circumference. Has been transferred to the ground [in shade].

Thank you so much for providing the flowersofindia link. I had looked there under all the Irises but failed to get the ID. I had also confused this Iris with the one growing at my son’s place in Los Altos, California. I found so many differences! These pics shown once again for comparison… … had identified this as Dietis iridioides – African Iris, Morea Lily, Fortnight Lily

First one (yellow) is Nasturtium – Tropaeolum majus – beautiful and delicious.

–phk2 is garden nasturtium: Tropaeolum majus
–phk3 is walking iris: Neomarica caerulea.

It should be Neomarica gracilis as per images herein.

Id of Flower – Id10052020SH1 : 4 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (7)- around 700 kb each.

Can anyone please help me in identifying this Orchid ? I don’t remember how did I plant this. Whether it was a bulb or only a leaf (like Saussurea obvallata). Just thought that it’s a simple ornamental leaf plant and didn’t notice when did it bloom. Was so excited to see this beautiful and fragrant flower.
