Pogonatherum paniceum, is an indicator of moisture and usually found on wet rocks and banks of streams. Also found on walls and cliffs in moist localities. If you find this grass on a relatively dry area, be sure that there is ground water below.

It is also used as an ornamental grass and traded as ‘mini bamboo’ by horticulturists.

Kindly help Id this shrub abt 2 feet in height at a housing society garden at Pune. I have seen it grow taller in the past. Not seen any inflorescence as yet.

Pogonatherum paniceum (Mini bamboo grown as ornamental)


This is Pogonatherum paniceum, an indicator of moisture and usually found on wet rocks and banks of streams. Also found on walls and cliffs in moist localities.
If you find this grass on a relatively dry area, be sure that there is ground water below.
It is also used as an ornamental grass and traded as ‘mini bamboo’ by horticulturists.
Pogonatherum crinitum is another similar species.

Definitely Pogonatherum, I think.
But is it Pogonatherum paniceum or Pogonatherum crinitum?
Please check these pictures too. Are they the same? I have marked them as Pogonatherum crinitum, but I am not 100% sure.

Pogonatherum paniceum. Most of the cultivated/ornamental are P.paniceum.

A Grass of Ajibarang Limestone:
A short grass with brown inflorescence. In the past, I think it was
used for making the crickets cricking loudly? ID is requested.

My guess is Pogonatherum paniceum..
