Annuals. Culms 10-50 cm high, tufted, erect or ascending. Leaves 4-10 x 0.2 – 0.5 cm, linear-lanceolate, base narrow or rounded, apex acuminate, flat; sheaths to 6 cm long; ligules membranous, rounded. Panicles 1-6 cm long, spiciform. Spikelets 2-3 mm long, ovate-acute, slightly gibbous. Lower glume 1-1.5 x 1 mm, ovate-acute, clasping at base. Upper glume 2-3 x 0.5 – 1 mm, ovate-oblong. Lower floret male or barren. Upper floret bisexual. First lemma 2-3 x 0.5 – 1mm, ovate-lanceolate. Palea minute or absent. Second lemma c. 1 mm long, oblong-acute, coriaceous. Palea similar. Stamens 3; anthers deep violet. Stigmas violet.

This spike was shot from near Shilling, is it possible to id from these pics only?? I do not have any other click of this grass… Sacciolepis indica. Also, a part of the valley is in the Askot Wildlife Sanctuary. Help me in identification of the grass species photographed at Nelapattu and Pulicat area of Nellore district. Plant 5-10 cm in height, spike solitary. Grass AL 5a is Sacciolepis indica. It is found all over India in moist, swampy localities and is highly variable.
