-the Bird of Paradise– Saw a lot of them yesterday in LA, Hollywood.
Commelinales & Zingiberales Week: Bird-of-paradise: Common name : Bird-of-paradise – Here are mine from Delhi and California where it is very commonly grown – The Bird of Paradise is the national flower of Madeira. It grows everywhere in Madeira. I saw them even along the treck-paths and along the levandas, the human made water canals. But when I visited Madeira, I made slides. no digital fotos. – After seeing more photographs I am inclined to think that although my Californian plant is clearly Strelitzia reginae (the boat shaped structure formed by two lateral petals is clear), my two photographs from Delhi, Commelinales & Zingiberales Week: Bird of Paradise: Bird-of-paradise Heliconia family
Commelinales & Zingiberales Week: Heliconiaceae, Heliconia from Delhi for ID: I had initially identified this plant as Strelitzia reginae and uploaded in that thread, but perhaps it belongs to genus Heliconia, because of narrow
perianth tube. Experts may please comment. – I am confused, but for me this is Sterlitzia only!!! – I think this is Strelitzia reginae – I feel that it is strelitzia, as you yourself thought first.
MS 140711 -40 – Strelitzia reginae -Bird of paradise.: Strelitzia reginae–Bird of paradise, crane flower.

Heliconia ¿ species ? Dear friends, I guess there is mix up of two sp.
1st image is Strelitzia reginae Yes …, the first pic is of 11 NOV, and the rest are of 12 NOV.
I mistook them to be same plants.
Thanks very much for the ID of the first pic. Rest sp. Heliconia psittacorum ?? Yes, you must be correct, …!!!
Thank you very much for sorting the mess. 1, Sterlitzia reginae
2 may be not??? heliconia psittocorum, diagnostic red bract is absent seems to be bud… it seems to be heliconia angusta, yellow christmas var, or heliconia psittacorum, yellow parrot flower.
3 bract is large like Sterliztia reginae so it has its seeds.
STERLITZIA NICOLAI ( BIRD OF PARADISE ): 8 posts by 5 authors. 1 image.
Attaching a collage of Sterlitzia nicolai (BIRD OF PARADISE). I saw this beauty for the first time in Loyed Botanic garden at Darjelling in 1965. Next time I saw it in a flower show at Dehradun. yes. they can be spectacular Is it Sterlitzia nicolai or S. reginai? Isn’t this Strelitzia reginae, comparatively short plants with orange flowers?
Strelitzia nicolai are taller plants with white flowers. I will correct accordingly.
Thanks for catching it, … I did not read … note above. I just looked at the picture. my mistake.
The distinctions are :
S. Nicolai are huge plants about 7 to 10 feet tall, blue black bract and white sepals and blue stamen with white stigma sticking out and they begin to look messy after a day or two and S. reginae plants are shorter, flowers with yellow sepals, green bracts and blue stamen with white stigma sticking out they seem to maintain their form much longer and don’t make a visual mess.
