Strychnos species?- Shimoga, Karnataka


ID Help requested: 3 high res. images.

Please help with the identification of this plant.

Location: Shimoga, Karnataka
Date: May 15, 2023
Elevation:  646 m 
Habitat : slightly disturbed forest


It seems to be a Strychnos species. Preferably woody climbers.


Please check with Strychnos nux-vomica of Loganiaceae.


Or Flacourtia montana of the family Salicaceae.


Check with Strychnos wallichiana!


Tendrils are not there and Strychnos wallichiana are not like the position of leaves.


May be
Why not try cinnamomum sps.


Does not match with either of these as per the following:

Leaves seem to be alternate.

Can you try new images of the whole habitat of  plants. Try to new images of the flowers and fruits or seeds.


The reason for the confusion is the juvenile stage of the plant. Often the newly growing twig differs from the flowering and fruiting twig. Branch here is actively growing. Thorns are a characteristic feature of Strychnos, so also venation.
