A wild plant taken on the 8th of Sept,11 at Pahalgam, Kashmir. Found these at many places along the roads. I was asked to keep away as these if touched, can leave a burning sensation on the skin. This is known as Bichhoo Booti, bites like scorpion, causes burning sensation due to minute stings present on the entire body, this can be an Urtica sp. (Urticaceae) yes Brennnessel (German), stinging nettel (english) (/Urtica dioica/), fodder plant for many butterflies. Used as liquid manure, ichor (Jauche) used against aphids young leaves used in salad, to make soups, Brennnessel tee is quite popular. Yes it is Urtica dioica. Found in Pachmarhi (M.P.) yes, stings… like the stinging nettle of europe… the tips of the hairs on the plants’ parts has histamine… same chemical released by our body when we have allergies and its reactions sting the eyes, nose, skin etc, remember?// VoF Week :: Urtica dioica at Valley of Flowers:

This one looked like the stinging nettle from a distance but up close its smooth leaves and lack of stinging hairs pointed to another species. I touched the leaves without feeling any sting. Which species could it be? Please advise.

06 August 2016 Thanks, …, for detailed images. I also feel Urticaceae only. Looks like Urtica dioica species. Could be a variety. Thank you … It had no stinging hairs despite its close resemblance to U. dioica. Urtica dioica var. afghanica is often without stinging hairs. This may be checked, the area is not far away from Himalayas. Yes to Me! I also checked Urtica hyperborea, Urtica mairei and Urtica pilulifera from BSI Flora of India (with distribution shown in Himachal), but found these also having stinging hairs. .
