valeriana jatamansi… id 240210: Here are the photos of what I had put together with Valeriana hardwickii by mistake. .. for corrections. .. also suggested this to be V. jatamansi. Kalatop, Chamba always say, BEST WAY IS TO TAKE MULTIPLE PICTURES FROM MULTIPLE ANGLES. You never know what you may miss. But still people tend to take picture of relevant parts. I will give you one simple example with orchids.

valeriana..id al220210: I think Valeriana hardwickii There are more than one plant. 1-2 I have doubts about what … claims especially if leaves are simple (My contention is based on the pic available on FOI, just in case FOI has wrong plant) and last one is Asteraceae. Perhaps it should be understood that all three species V. pyrolaefolia, V. jatamansii and V. hardwickii have simple basal leaves. In V. pyrolaefolia cauline are also simple, in V. jatamansii cauline 3-fid and in Hardwickii cauline 3-7 pinnatipartite (which can be clearly seen). Ok, I understood the issue here. Thanks for pointing. May be these pictures can clear the doubts over V. jatamansi and V. hardwickii. the 1st pic is V. hardwicki and the 2nd one is V. jatamansi. While … 2 nd picture is clearly V. jatamansi I think … has the technical data but… To resolve the issue, I think you have to check the original photograph number as you clicked the photographs to know whether these photographs belong to the same plant. Third is clearly V. hardwickii, second could be both V. hardwickii or V. jatamansii as … suggested. Second and third photographs are from the same plant/Flower ( dscn5013a.jpg & dscn5015a.jpg). the First one was just for comparison… In this series of identification there had been two sets of photographs… you were referring to the first set and I was to the second one.. anyhow, in the first set dscn5010a/5017a belong to the same plant (V. hardwickii) and the dscn5018a belonged to the other plant… if you need I can re post the second as a different observation…

Valeriana jatamansi March 2019, Mcleodganj and above, Dharamshala, HP. I have been looking at the flowers of our valerians here. In much of the literature on the species V. jatamansi, it is mentioned that the male and female flowers are found on different plants. I decided to have a closer look at the flowers and found the following: There are two kinds of flowers on different plants, one larger than the other. The smaller flowers are barely 3mm across with a style (with a trifid stigma) projecting well beyond the corolla tube. Inside the tube are three stamens whose anthers are below the neck of the corolla tube. Unless the stamens are sterile, the flower is hermaphrodite and not a female flower even though only style is visible. The larger, almost twice the size, has three stamens projecting out with white anthers and one hair-like style which seems to grow longer after the stamens drop their anthers. That stigma too becomes trifid later. Here again, unless the stigma is sterile, the flower is hermaphrodite. It can very well be that the stamens of the smaller and stigma of the larger are sterile and flowers are dominantly male and female. Otherwise they are merely pin and thrum type. Please advise. Following this observation I thought it would be important to see if the ‘male’ plants seed (proving they are not male but hermaphrodite). I found both the larger and the smaller varieties seeding.
