Ziziphus xylopyrus (Retz.) Willd., wild tree from Manmad area of Nashik dt, Maharashtra

Yes, the fruits are inedible..

…, but I have eaten a some of the wild ber vars. from ruins in my childhood. And some of them look like one in this photo.

The fruits are very hard , that is the meaning of Xylopyrus (wood like fruit), it is difficult to eat. Some other wild species are there. Fruits of them are edible.

Notes from Botanical Survey of IndiaZiziphus caracutta Roxb. was described in 1824. Later authors reduced it as a synonym of Z. xylopyrus var. glaberrima. Santapau (1953) raised it to the status of a species Z. glaberrima. A critical study of the above two taxa reveals that they are conspecific and therefore, they are treated here under a single taxon Z. caracutta, being the earliest valid name.

Nice Photograph … As usual outstanding.
It’s called घोट्या in marathi in our region. A medium sized tree and mostly used as a Goat fodder plant.
but as per IPNI and The Plant list, Ziziphus xylopyrus (Retz.) Willd. is the accepted name.
Experts comments, please! ☺🙏

Thanks … for the appreciation and the local name – will add it in names database.
The name Ziziphus caracutta Buch.-Ham. ex Roxb. is hardly popular; it is a unresolved name at The Plants List; put as a synonym of Ziziphus xylopyrus (Retz.) Willd. at some sites, including India Biodiversity Portal, while at Botanical Survey of India, it has a very far relation to Z. xylopyrus. But the small note at the end of page is interesting, worth heeding.
I hope those studying the Ziziphus genus in India, throw more light by sorting their species.

Thanks, …  Pl. Also efi site page in this regard.

Yes …, there is some useful discussion in … post.

Thanks for this post! I was searching for Id of this Ziziphus for too long !! I think this Ziziphus  is present on Tilak Bridge Dadar on either sides of bridge while descending from Plaza theater to Khodadad circle. One more similar tree I saw earlier in Malad West. Very soon I ll share few images in same thread…
