The tuber just needs to be big enough to flower but when it does you will smell it sooner than you see it. The flowers are usually dark brown and spotted and appear before the leaves. The tuber can even flower out of soil.
.
The fruits are often half buried in the soil. They usually start to color from red to purple when fully ripe. In contrast to several other Araceae do the peduncles of Sauromatum not extend after pollination so the fruit will be at the same level as the initial inflorescence: close to the soil.
.
A more compact form of S. venosum can be found in Maharashtra state, the Himalayan forms tend to be taller and more lush.

Some old Kalatope id’s.. Al011111: Some old id’s forgotten but this one came to memeory because of my old
Arisaema sp. id’s

Location Kalatope, Chamba
Altitude 2100 mts
Habit herb
Habitat wild
Height 30-36 inches

Season July
I could never see the flowering in this one… wonder why…??

This is Sauromatum venosum, not an Arisaema. The tuber just needs to be big enough to flower but when it does you will smell it sooner than you see it. The flowers are usually dark brown and spotted and appear
before the leaves. The tuber can even flower out of soil.
Just feed it well and I am sure it will flower.

Herb for ID – Wai (Maharashtra) – By Prasad Pandhare:  I am forwarding a pic of probably a herb (or may be a climber not sure) that was clicked last week near Wai (Maharashtra Western Ghats). I am requesting if some one could ID this.

Arisaema sp. I hope

Local Marathi name for this plant is : Ran-Suran.

Check for Amorphophallus bulbifer (ref: Flowers of India)

Pl also check it for Sauromatum venosum.

Agree with …, fair chance of it being Sauromatum venosum.
This species flowers before the leaves appear.

Last year I had posted pictures of the same plant. This year I wanted to keep a track of it to observe its flowering. But I was in US and missed the opportunity again. Hope I will find it next year.

This could be Sauromatum venosum.

I have collections of this species in my garden, collected from the same locality..

Fruit for id from Manali-NS 2012: This fruit was earlier found by me and … in Shimla (in 2010), no associated vegetative parts were around…

again I got it in Manali, in similar condition,
the fruits were lying on ground as if borne on a very short peduncle, but peduncle could not be seen
looks like any member from Araceae.. closest I can think is Sauromatum venosum….

want to have your opinion please…

I think your assesment is correct, this indeed is the fruit of Sauromatum venosum, the fruits are often half buried in the soil as can be seen on this picture:
They usually start to color from red to purple when fully ripe. In contrast to several other Araceae do the peduncles of Sauromatum not extend after pollination so the fruit will be at the same level as the initial inflorescence: close to the soil.

A more compact form of S. venosum can be found in Maharashtra state, the Himalayan forms tend to be taller and more lush.

Yes indeed
Some species of Amorphophallus

in Hindi  Suran

Typhonium venosum syn. Sauromattum guttatum of Araceae.

Typhonium venosum syn. Sauromattum venosum

Family: Araceae

I also recently observed quite a number of these plants on Purandar and also in the area at the base of it last week but failed to find any inflorescence so far. It should arise before the leaves would appear I suppose.

Thanks … for the help and a big thanks to … and … for the identification…….this plant had me searched lot of books but was a big mystery till today.

Yes it is. May be now in Typhonium genus.

leaves emerge a bit later may be we can see them?

Yes, I think, Sauromatum venosum.

Thank you …, I will take a look soon to see if we have the leaves.

It remains leafless during the flowering phase and will develop leaves in the end of June.

I noticed the fresh leaves yesterday but since I haven’t been checking everyday these could have been out for some days.

nice. lets see what … thinks. for my part i like to see the spiralling leaves emerging on one stem?

pictures from kew are informative, current growing not old literature.
http://www.kew.org/science-conservation/plants-fungi/sauromatum-venosum-voodoo-lily

I still think the same. Let the leaves expand fully and become pedate. I can also post the photographs of leaves.

Here is one from yesterday. 1 image.

Wonderful. you got it. just by looks… it matches the pattern of the umbrella like curvy “stem” on which the serrated leaflets are growing, and the veins are too.
Dave’s garden site shows leaves upfront as soon as the link opens up.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2055/
the kew url above: one has to open the button for more info to see the leaves. the dx is correct then

wonder what would … opinion be now, … let us know please.

did fruits ever develop
I dont know the natural history of this plant
May be … can tell us?

I still remain with my first opinion:- Sauromatum venosum only.
Baba Ram Dev Ji call it Telia Kand and working on its anti-cancerous properties.
… can search for its fruits which remain at the ground level and may be half inside.

I found fruit on at least one plant (I have been looking) this morning and photographed it. Hopefully in the coming days I will see more fruiting. 2 images.

nice to see the young fruits (green). thanks for the follow up.

lets see what they turn to  — color-wise esp. since … said Dr Almeida mentions color red for the berries.
and if there are many, may be you can dig one.. to look at the rhizome.

Thank you …. There are many here but I have found only one fruiting yet. But I will see if others are fruiting soon too and collect a sample for a closer look.

I was glad to find two flowers of S. venosum growing side by side. I peeled the spathe to reveal the male and female flowers (since the plant is quite common in our area, I took the liberty!). Here are the results.
