This species is endemic to India. It is distributed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Sikkim and Tamil Nadu; probably endemic to Indian subcontinent (Cook 1996). There are also representative specimens from Kerala are available at Madras Herbarium. Its presence is Sri Lanka has been quoted, however it is not present in this country (Dinesh Albertson pers. comm. 2010)

In shallow water, in swamps and rice fields and also reported from sugarcane fields (Cook 1996).
This species is threatened by habitat loss due to wetland encroachment and habitat conversion.

Please help in identifying this small herb found on fallow land after paddy harvest.
Lower leaves with toothed-margin; plant unarmed

Thank you sir, just read from google that this is a good aquarium plant, because the lower leaves gets dissected when submersed.


This is Hygrophila heinei Sreemadh. (Acanthaceae). It is very commonly seen in the wetlands of Tanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tirunelveli districts.
