Yes Justicia adhatoda .. medicinally important plant
indeed there is a lot of documentation about J. adhatoda being used medicinally… I wonder if it also has the same use in these parts…
Yes, this is Adhatoda vasica, Acanthaceae
… yes, Justicia adhatoda L. (syn. Adhatoda vasica Nees)
commonly known as: Malabar nut, white vasa, yellow vasa • Assamese:
its tricky here, even name i mean Genus Adhatoda is conserved..
the british east India co physicians learnt it from local Kavirajs in Bengal and Made up the patent medicine Glycodin Terp-Vasaka and made millions of POUNDS sterling from the Indian Market…. Its available I believe even now…
Yes … I remember my grandmother giving us Kadha of Adulsa leaves for cough.
But the flowers must be having nektar. Because I remember my mother singing: अडूलश्याची फुले देठांत थेंब गोड. can’t remember how it goes further.
… I do not know this full song but I can help translate what … has written. There is a drop of sweetness in the stalk of adulsa flower.
Genus names Adhatoda is not conserved against Justicia. The importance of a conserved name ceases when it is merged into another genus. Adhatoda Adans. and Adahatoda Mill. are merged with Justicia L. The case is somewhat similar (though not exactly) to Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. which was conserved against Lycopersicon lycopersicum, but no longer nomina conservanda as genus Lycopersicon is merged with Solanum, and tomato is now Solanum lycopersicum.
Sirji i never said that genus Adhatoda was conserved against Justicia L., Just i said its a conserved name and type is Adhatoda vasica Nees, which later also called as Adhatoda zeylanica… now correct name may be Justicia or Adhatoda did not bother to me…
its really hard to follow others… in many cases they split the genus on very minute characters, and in some of the Genus they just believe in merging the things….
eg. in Acanthaceae, Genus like Carvia, Strobilanthus, Nilgrianthes, Thelepaepale, Mackenzia, etc etc.. are been merged.. some follow them and some do not..
In case of Sterculia previous month we saw Sterculia urens was seperated from the genus… and same in the case of Euphorbias and Cassias…

Very illustrative photographs
We plant this sp. mainly as hedge plant. Because its not eaten by goat, cattle etc.,
Thanks… for such an illustrative upload, this plant we usually ignore due to its abundance.. but this should not be underestimated on any account..
Many thanks … for additional information. Thanks … Sir. yes Sir u r right in that aspect, i also did this before joining the group. But now i am not thinking any plant as common or weed. All plant are very useful and beautiful in the eyes of a taxonomist.
– Adenanthera vasika does not figure in Kew Plant List, IPNI or GRIN, and evidently not a published name. Adenathera is a genus of Fabaceae:Mimosoideae, and looks strange how the two are linked, except for if an illegitimate name if ever published. But then this should be mentioned in at least IPNI and Kew Plant List, which list all published names. But strangely there are so many sources on the net mentioning this name (as synonym of Adhatoda vasica), as mentioned by …
– … me too had the same doubt … two distinct genera made synonymous must be a blunder somewhere, sometime ago … later on, simply must have got copy-pasted in various instances. Though this matter itself is irrelevant to many who visit those sites … it gives a good idea of errors floating on the internet.
– Seems to me like a result of one mistake being copied again and again and again….
None of those sites are authentic which shows this plant name on google and none of the authentic sites show this plant.
– This one example points to a glaring problem in Herbal medicine field.. lack of true scholarship shown by the traders and their webmasters… they just cut and paste… such discrepancy hopefully serves as a red flag to the consumers! I often wonder what can one do? If they are so careless with what they write, how careful can they be with what they put in their bottles?

Posting tiny images of *Adhatoda vasica* so that mail size doesn’t exceed0.10 MB. It may work!
This is the plant that had sparked my interest in herbal medicine when I was a wee child…and so I chose this humble plant for my May 18, “Fascination of Plants Day” plant.
As children we had seen these plants on roadsides, by the farms, country lanes, village gardens and as bundles of green leaves sold by the herb vendors in the local vegetable markets.
This highly useful therapeutically important plant with beautiful green foliage and equally fascinating orchid like flowers used to be a common sight in bengal…now we hardly ever see it thanks to the highrises that have taken over and the newly minted owners want not the local flora but plants that are easy to care for …
and we now live in a jungle of crotons and ixoras.
MEET ADAHTODA VASICA or Basak pata
grows to be about 5 feet tall, has shiny green foliage, leaves about 6 inches long…
the flowers are small white with purple markings, its looks reminds one of orchids …
Leaf juice and stembark juice or tea is very useful in Cough, cold, Asthma…and even as an anti- anthelmentic…
Was the main ingredient in Glycodin terp-vasaka, a patented medicine that used to be available in India in the years gone by.
MY PICTURES today are from the flower show earlier this year at the Hort. ANd plant is growing a tub of soil.
That’s a sorry state of affairs …. Hort show will be like like a zoo where we would have to go to see an elephant or a museum where we have to go to see a model of a dodo-bird.

Attaching an image of a Carpenter Bee on the flowers of Adhatoda vasica.
This is a Bumble bee. The previous one was a Carpenter bee. In India, Bumble bees are generally found in the Himalayas and do not descend below 3000 ft. Bumble bees differ from Carpenter bees by having yellow markings and hairy bodies.
Attached images are Adhatoda vasica Nees collected from Kamrup district, Assam

Nice photographs … New accepted name is Justicia adhatoda L.
This is Adhatoda vasica of the BENGAL PLANTS.
Thank you …, but Bengali names sometimes can be confusing too!
Photographs are wonderfully taken from different angels. In case zygomorphic flowers specially with bilabiate corolla, we always suggest students to draw 3 views (anterior, posterior and side/lateral facing) of the flower for detail understanding of floral parts.
This would be BAASOK or BAAKAS in English transliteration.
In my childhood i was introduced to this plant as Adusa in hindi.(d to be pronounced as d in daily). I was told this plant is used in cough medicines??
Is it correct.
Justicia adhatoda

Justicia adhatoda
Thank you … It does seem like Justicia adhatoda or the Malabar Nut.
the leaves are an important Ayurveda medicine for coughs and colds esp. bronchial infections and inflammations.
basis for the patent medicine of yore … Gylocdin terp-vasaka
used to come with a red label in a brown /dark ember bottle… strong smell.
try to see if you can find and save the extremely tiny seeds… I would love to see them from the wild…
Thank you … How do I collect the seeds if I am successful in finding the shrub again?
I understand they are quite tiny
the tiny self seed in the moist and warm areas
that’s why it used to grow along human dwellings near ponds in rural bengal and city outskirts
but all the development has almost made this very useful very common plant rare to see and I get excited when I see it … in real life or as in your pictures’ case…
no need to search for it again.. i thought it was near you.
Yes a common ingredient of ayurvedic cough syrups.

Arduso is a different plant which is called Ailanthus excelsa in Gujarati.
Ardusi is correct
I have removed the name from the compilation, and put a justification in the blog.
Thank you for putting this extensive and comprehensive list together, …
Justicia adhatoda is one such plant that has many regional stories across India.
I would just like to add a point that the name ‘adhatoda’ comes from the Tamil word ‘adathoda’, which means ‘that which (even) the goat does not eat’ (Berry et al., 2020).
Furthermore, in our study we found that there are two distinct morphotypes of J. adhatoda, one appearing to be associated with drier, and other to wetter growing environments in India. To distinguish them, we proposed the two morphotypes to be named: Justicia adhatoda var. vasica and Justicia adhatoda var. zeylanica, respectively, for the morphotypes, in keeping with the vague north–south divide presented in the writings of earlier botanists.
