Plant name: Arthrocnemum indicum Thw.,  Enum. Pl. Zeyl. 246. 1861.
Ver.names: Glosswort, brown headed glosswort (Eng.); Pogadala chettu, koyyapippili పొగడాలచెట్టు, కొయ్యపిప్పిలి (Tel.).
Family: Amaranthaceae
Description:
Halophytic, succulent, much branched shrubs with jointed leafless stems; base woody;  stem mat forming, up to 50cm tall. Branches glaucous – green; erect or ascending, fleshy and jointed, 3-8 mm in diam., sometimes rooting at nodes; inter nodal segments usually club-shaped, each with a pair of opposite, terminal cups embracing the base of the next segment. Flowers minute, in simple cymes (hermaphrodite or unisexual)  immersed in the nodal cup. Perianth 4-fid, swollen and spongy in fruit. Stamens 1. Style with 2 stigmas. Utricle with membranous or indurated pericarp. 
Habitat & location: Found in saline marshy places and sea coasts.
