Lycoris radiata (red spider lily, red magic lily) is a plant in the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae, subfamily Amaryllidoideae.[2] Originally from China, Korea and Nepal, it was introduced into Japan and from there to the United States and elsewhere. It is considered naturalized in Seychelles and in the Ryukyu Islands.[3]

It flowers in the late summer or autumn, often in response to heavy rainfall. The common name hurricane lily refers to this characteristic, as do other common names, such as resurrection lily; these may be used for the genus as a whole.[4]
Lycoris radiata is a bulbous perennial. It normally flowers before the leaves fully appear, on stems 30–70 centimetres (12–28 in) tall. The leaves are parallel-sided, 0.5–1 centimetre (0.20–0.39 in) wide with a paler central stripe. The red flowers are arranged in umbels. Individual flowers are irregular, with narrow segments which curve backwards, and long projecting stamens.[5][6][7]
The bulbs of Lycoris radiata are very poisonous. These are mostly used in Japan, and they are used to surround their paddies and houses to keep the pest and mice away. That is why most of them grow close to rivers now.[10] In Japan the Red Spider Lily signals the arrival of fall. Many Buddhist will use it to celebrate the arrival of fall with a ceremony at the tomb of one of their ancestors. They plant them on graves because it shows a tribute to the dead. People believe that since the Red Spider Lily is mostly associated with death that one should never give a bouquet of these flowers.[12]

Lily flower for ID : 7 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (2).

We brought few bulbs this year and now these flowers are results of that in our garden at Tala Distt Umaria in M.P. Photographed today morning.
First picture is of buds and second of Flower.
None of the books we have many Lily photographs to ID this.
May we request you to please help.

Is this Red Spider Lily Lycoris radiata??

Please validate

I think yes.

Many thanks but other doubt is Red Nerine Lily, Guernsey Lily, Berglelie  Botanical name: Nerine sarniensis   Family: Amaryllidaceae

Thats why I think we need to look at it again.

This is Nerine sarniensis.

I have seen & photographed in Srinagar.

I agree with … ID.

… ID is correct.  It is Red Spider Lily Lycoris radiata for sure.

For some reason I was looking up “tiger” in our database and this popped up… why ?

i dont know unless the word appears somewhere in the file… REGARDLESS of the why?

I think this a very nice case to illustrate the dangers of just matching up of pictures on google or some picture book…

This is indeed Spider lily  Lycoris radiata as … has written.

Its NOT Nerine sarniensis.

this is the danger of just matching some pictures in a hurry… or with a preconceived notion

take your time and  study the structures… try to study the features and their shapes, color and numbers etc…

every case is learning process…
i love this exercise… hope you do too, that’s the only way to grow …
and gain knowledge of Botany classification and id  even when we are nonbotanist-enthusiasts  like myself and countless others..
ps … it would be interesting if you had taken pictures of the bulbs then or now after flowering?
could we see them please? thanks

many thanks for your kind words.
In fact I did not photographed the bulbs as it’s growing in the garden.
I will do it some time and post the pictures.
