Apiaceae (earlier and a.k.a. Umbelliferae) (carrot family) » Coriandrum sativum var. vulgare
kor-ee-AN-drum — from the Greek koris, a bug or gnat; referring to its aroma
sa-TEE-vum — cultivated
vul-GAIR-ee — common
Distribution: naturalized worldwide, probable origin eastern Mediterranean region
Edible use:
the young shoot and leaves (before flowering) normally used as SPICE in most of the oriental recipes for lending its unique taste and smell, at least in one instance known to me as a VEGETABLE … popular among Maharashtrians as kothimbir vadi. Adding dried fruits (spice – referred to as seeds in common parlance) lend the same taste and smell plus lemony flavour the roots have a deeper, more intense flavour than the leaves and stem
tidbits:
If the plant has flowered the taste becomes increasingly bitter and should not be used in recipes calling for coriander
Quoted from Seasoned Advice <http://cooking.stackexchange.com/what-is-coriander-roo…>
… also known as Chinese parsley or, particularly in the Americas, cilantro … should not be confused with Culantro (Eryngium foetidum L.) which is a close relative to coriander
Quoted from Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriander>
other variety:
var. microcarpum, grown in Russia and Central Europe has smaller fruits (less than 3 mm) and contains more essential oil than the oriental variety var. vulgare (greater than 3 mm), which is cultivated for fruits and leaves.

Today i found some butterflies having merry times around coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) inflorescence. I couldn’t help but take a couple of shots that i want to share with you.

Species (plant) : Coriandrum sativum L.

Type : cultivated on backyard

Date : 10/03/2012, 10.10 a.m.

Place : Gobra (Hooghly), West Bengal

It is very difficult to catch the restless Psyche butterfly. You got both male and female.

Here is another one form the same coriander – slate flash (Rapala manea) butterfly on coriander.

Psyche is common here and i have more of psyche shot at other times. Attaching here one that i photographed in February this year.

  • Cautionary Clarification: Field research notes the use of dunia within local kitchen gardens. However, linguistically and botanically, dunia (or naga dunia) is the primary indigenous name for culantro (Eryngium foetidum), an entirely separate, spiky-leaved perennial species. Because culantro and true coriander share near-identical citrus-pungent aromatic profiles and culinary functions, the name dunia was colloquially extended to Coriandrum sativum as a borrowed name. As such, dunia is a name, more known for culantro. … compiled from web

മല്ലി malli
  • വിക്കിപീഡിയ – സ്വതന്ത്രസർവ്വവിജ്ഞാനകോശം … Wikipedia – The Free Encyclopedia … (accessed: June 17, 2026)
  • Linguistic Trivia: While the word Malli (മല്ലി) is the universal colloquial term for coriander seeds in modern Kerala, it is not explicitly recorded as such in Hermann Gundert’s historic 1872 Malayalam and English Dictionary. Instead, the lexicon catalogs the spice exclusively under its formal, unclipped name, kothamalli (കൊത്തമല്ലി). Over the subsequent century, everyday market usage naturally trimmed the word down to the simplified malli (മല്ലി) found in contemporary Indian kitchens today. … compiled from web.

  • Cautionary Clarification: While recorded as a historical variant in 19th-century colonial lexicons, ਦੁਨੀਆ dunia is not a valid modern colloquial or botanical name for coriander in Punjab. In modern Punjabi, dunia translates exclusively to “the world” or “the universe”. Its appearance in old botanical indexing is highly likely an archaic printing error, a phonetic slip, or a scribal blending of the standard word ਧਨੀਆ dhania. To avoid confusion with everyday speech, it is best to avoid usage of this name. … compiled from web
