Decalepis hamiltonii Wight & Arn. is a species of plant in the genus Decalepis.
It is endemic to Peninsular India and known by its names of Maredu Kommulu, Nannari kommulu and Madina Kommulu in Telugu, Makali beru in Kannada and Magali kizhangu in Tamil is a plant whose root is used in ayurvedic medicines and for use in pickles. It belongs to the family Asclepiadaceae.
The English name of swallowroot is sometimes used for the plant and studies have shown that it has insecticidal activity and a potential use in control of stored grain pests. The active ingredient in the root was synthesized and encapsulated with beta-cyclodextrins. The roots were also subjected to supercritical carbon-dioxide based extraction at the Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, India.
The root contains antioxidants and extraction methods for it have been patented.[1]
The popularity of decalepis in the International markets recently has made the price of it soar and sends worrying signals of it getting being endangered due to over-exploitation.[2]

It is my pleasure to share few images of Decalepis hamiltonii (Apocynaceae) said to be endemic to Southern Peninsular India

Habit: Shrub

Habitat: Dry deciduous forest.

Sighting: Devarayanadurga, Tumkur, Karnataka, about 800 msl

Date: 29-06-2014, 07-07-2014, 12-07-2014 and 02-08-2014

Whether it was trying to climb somewhere?

Yes … It appeared that it was leaning towards another bush by the side. Had produced lot of branches in that direction.

Thank you …, It appeared from the photos that the habit is scandent, forming a bush.
