• Tulu: ನಿರ್ಕೂವೆ neerkoove I think you have used FRLHT words i.e. koomana gedde, neer kove for Kannada transliteration/ translation using google translation link. In my view the words ‘ಕೋಮನ ಗೆಡ್ಡೆ , ನೀರ್ ಕೋವೆ’ are more appropriate. Nevertheless, it is left to your discretion to use these wordsor retain those in your posting. Google translation is not perfect … More often than not, it is subject to correction by those who know Kannada. Many thanks, dear Mahadewara ji, for validating the Kannada names.
I depend on https://alar.ink/ for checking possibilities of any given names in Kannada.
I will use ನೀರ್ ಕೋವೆ for neer kove as you have pointed out.
About ಕೋಮನ and ಕೋಮಣ …
at https://alar.ink/ … only the latter (ಕೋಮಣ) is listed, with the meaning as loin cloth. ಕೋಮನ is not listed.
Searching ಕೋಮನ and ಕೋಮಣ in Google, ಕೋಮನ does not give relevant results, while ಕೋಮಣ does.
I think we will go with ಕೋಮಣ.
What are your thoughts?
I did not pay attention to ಕೋವೆ in your suggestion.
ಕೋವೆ =
and few more meanings, not relevant to plants.
ಕೂವೆ =
and a few more meanings.

… neeru koove = water arrowroot, named so due to its aquatic habit and resemblance with Maranta and Curcuma species.
Let us therefore go with ನೀರ್ ಕೂವೆ for neeru koove.

I had seen this small aquatic herb at a stream near Karikale, North Karnataka. Date/Time: 17-01-2011 / 11:30AM Location: Karikale, North Karnataka Habitat: Wild Plant Habit: Herb, (aquatic) around 25 to 30cm Leaves around 10 – 12cm, undulate, petioles around 10 to 15cm. Flowers not seen. Bot. name: Lagenandra ovata . Tamil name for Lagenandra ovata (L.) Thwaites: Please help me coin a name for Lagenandra ovata (L.) Thwaites in Tamil.
It is distributed in Tamil Nadu as per BSI.
On lines of name given in Kannada (ನೀರ ಕೂವೆ neera koove), Tulu (ನಿರ್ಕೂವೆ neerkoove) … literal meaning = water arrowroot, named so due to its aquatic habit and resemblance with Maranta and Curcuma species, I am thinking of நீர்அருருட்டு nir-aruruttu. Please help. The name அருருட்டு is just a (modified) transliteration of the English name Arrowroot and not a proper Tamil name.
I think நீர் கூவை Neer koovai or நீர் கூகை Neer koogai would be more appropriate for Lagenandra ovata. Koovai or Koogai are Tamil names for Maranta arundinacea, a similar-looking plant.
Note: I noticed that in some databases (FoI, FRLHT-ENVIS), the name Maravara tsjembu is erroneously listed as a Tamil name for Lagenandra ovata. This is a “Latin” name (now a synonym) originally applied to Remusatia vivipara in Hortus Malabaricus. Thank you very very much, …, for help.
Among the two options, I will take நீர் கூவை Neer koovai … it is closer to Kannada and Tulu names.
Yes, I had seen the Malabari name Maravara tsjembu in FRLHT-ENVIS … I knew it was placed wrongly for Tamil. . References:
