A strange flower or…??

Location Kalatope, Chamba
Altitude 2100 mts
Habit herb
Habitat wild
plant height  2 feet
Leaf length 14-18 inches approx

recently some clematis posted had long mustaches like this. IN CLOSE UP YOU CAN SEE THE STAR SHAPE OF ONE FLOWER. ONCE YOU CONCENTRATE YOU CAN SEE FEW. So it might be an inflorescence.

Are you sure that these are from a same plant? I think the the cordate leaf is from different plant and the moss like one is separate.

This, at least the last picture, is of Remusatia vivipara (Araceae). But the ‘bulbils’ look very different here, so may be of some other species.

This is a Araceae but a different genus I assume. It very common but actually I never tried checking it. All parts in the pic belong to the same plant including the rhizome.

I thought that they were a part of the moss so I had tried to get one plant.. and since I was in a hurry to get to my son’s school, I quickly took a photo… I am uploading a few more photos..
regards.. but you could be right and the moss might have been entangled with the roots…

Remusatia vivipara of Araceae family, for sure.

The inflorescence like shoots are the bulbiferous shoots, that bears bulbils which are capable of producing new plants asexually (please correlate the species name “vivipara” here)!
I do have pictures of flowers in my backup DVD’s. I shall upload the same after 15th.

What a life-saver you are… I was beginning to doubt my own eyes…

Actually I have seen this plant with branched inflorescence, so I was still a bit confused.
But as usual you are right…

Actually the credit goes to … for id. Thanks to … for the same. When I recently visited … farm in Waynad, I could photograph the same plant (attachment herewith).

Araceae like plant for id from Budher caves road Chakrata
This plant was seen at 2-3 places on Budher Caves Road Chakrata, Size about 10-20 inches
Inflorescence was like Clematis

Remusatia vivipara (Roxb.) Schott of Araceae, I guess.

You may be right but i think this is different.
I am attaching Remusatia vivipara here for comparision.
5 images.

Again, Remusatia vivipara.

I think earlier pics posted for id in the begining of this thread are different from these Remusatia vivipara pics. But only in inflorescence. Leaves looks same

I think they are same, just different stages of bloom. Something to do with protogyny and protoandry.

Thanks … for information. I was confused because i could not find any ref/image of this plant with hairy inflorescence

Again I am not sure whether that is inflorescence or not. They are the bulbils bearing stalks that are capable of producing new plants, that can vary a lot. I will upload the inflorescence sometime today or in few days.
Please refer an earlier discussion in our group @
efi thread…

nice pic and better info
did you find this in western ghats?
I found a nursery that will sell seeds… its called himalayan gardens and located in scotland…
has some beautiful pucture..
similar weather in scottish highlands and the himalayan foothills I guess.

Thanks … it is possible this plant is sold abroad, perhaps for ornamental purpose. It is one of edible Araceae members.
Found this plant in various places of Western Ghats, though not common. It rarely flowers, tiny bulbils borne on stolons do the work of reproduction … more at Wikipedia.

If it’s edible then I think it is the same plant we have here in Himachal and make a savoury dish Patora from it. I always thought it belonged to yam/ colocasia family. I will dig up some pictures and share them soon.

…, if you seen them as epiphyte, there is good chance that you are talking of same plant. This plant is distributed in Himalayas too. However the Himalayan regional names of this plant are not much known.
Will be glad to know of any name given to this plant in Himachal.

I am sorry …, I think we are talking about different plants. The one I see here grows on the ground and doesn’t flower. The leaves can become very large growing sometime to about 2-3 feet tall. The root as well as the leaves are edible. Hindi Kachalu, Local vernacular: Patroda.
I think it is Colocasia esculenta that we have here.

OK, … Incidentally, we (in Konkani) use the name patrodo for the dish made from Colocasia leaves !

At this url you ll find the nursery in scotland, they say its a somewhat reddish tuber and yellow flowers..
himalayangardens

Thanks …  … has been fortunate to see the flower in wilderness of Western Ghats – it is illustrated in his second book – Further Flowers of Sahyadri.

If its roots are addible then it is known as Ratalu in Hindi. Ratalu roots are rough brown with stiff blunt thorns on it. The flesh is deep pink, sometimes creamy.

ratalu looks like a generic name given to many plants – name especially referring to their tubers, most popular for Ipomoea batatas. Your description seems fitting for Ipomoea batatas.
Most probably Remusatia vivipara is not known as ratalu.

Looks like Remusatia hookeriana (Araceae).

I think this could be Remusatia hookerana. Please advise.

Today I noticed several flower spikes coming out of the ground next to this Remusatia. We had earlier guessed it to be R. hookeriana but after looking at the available literature and the new evidence, I think it to be R. vivipara instead. Please advise. 7 images.

Maybe some Alocasia, but flowers are required for id.

Remusatia sp.,

Alocasia macrorrhiza is much bigger and has no peltate leaf. Alocasia navicularis does, but has a peculair V-shaped rim. I think the best possible ID would be Remusatia vivipara. But indeed with Aracaea, spathes are needed to be sure.
