was an intern for migraine…now I dont know, stronger painkillers seem to have replaced vasoactive substances. We worry more about toxicity of ergot than the therapeutic benefits….
wiki has nice short essay with details and pictures … at URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergot
our old pharmacology texts used to show, as did the biochemistry texts… Many drugs are made from ergot which is actually a fungus called Claviceps purpurea. One of the famous banned drug from ergot is LSD . but that research stayed at theta level.. while ergotamine and cafergot have had a very practical legal usage in allopathic medicine… that’s why it stays up in memory and gets recalled first… I will tell you why I said ?ergot. As a child when Emergency was declared wheat available in the market was mixed with some other seed which I was told by someone that it is Congress grass seed and is called Ergot bi. I had those memories and so just wanted to confirm WHeat could be mixed in with the weeds seeds and simultaneously be infected with ergot fungus…
there are many episodes of ergot poisoning in europe when the entire section of population ate ergot infected rye bread.. rye is a type of wheat in europe….. so your neighbor of childhood may have it right that there was congress grass seeds and ergot… both.. could be… I wonder if anybody has looked into whether indians around that time had a higher incidence of leaky valve syndromes or other vascular disorders out of proportion HIGH incidence or miscarriages or other vascular events, incidences of which have since subsided … since the infected wheat is no longer consumed… we in India have the some of the strongest statisticians but the govt never looks into these kinds a data… I have not seen any papers related to wheat weed problems affecting heart or causing higher numbers of miscarriages/abortions….
This link for all the people who wants to know more about how ergot came to the attention of human civilization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergotism

MEXICAN BEETLE AND CONGRESS GRASS CONTROL : Attachments (1). 3 posts by 3 authors.
Can the learned botanists guide me on the subject of the Mexican beetle vs Congress grass.
1. How efficacious has the Mexican beetle proved in the control of the alien weed, Congress grass, in India?
Congress grass is Parthenium hysterphorus and the biocontrol agent is Zygogramma bicolor a coccinellid. Though the coccinellid grubs and adults feed voraciously on the plants and can defolitae it, have been released in many places for its control….. it has also started feeding on sunflower which is a commercial crop.
