Berberis angulosa Wall., Fl. Ind. 1: 227 1855. (syn:Berberis angulosa var. fasciculata Ahrendt);
Common name: Large-Flowered Barberry • Nepali: Chutre kanda

Spiny deciduous shrub about 1.5-2 m tall. Stem dark brown, stout, rigid, markedly sulcate, strongly terete or angled, conspicuously hairy, branches leafy, young shoots yellowish brown, puberulous, internodes 1.5-2 cm long, spines simple, slender, 3-5 fid, about 1-2.5 cm long. Leaves obovate or oblanceolate, 1-2.5 x 0.8-2 cm across, base linear cuneate, margin spinulose, apex mucronate and spinulose, chartaceous, coriaceous, dark green, glabrous above, paler puberulous beneath, inconspicuously veins, petiole sessile. Inflorescence solitary flowered, peduncles about 1-2 cm long. Flowers bisexual, yellow, fragrant, usually solitary rather large, about 10-15 mm across, pedicels about 10-25 mm long, bracts linear, apex acuminate, sepals 6, in 2 series, outer series smallest and inner series largest, outer series ovate, apex obtuse, about 5 x 3 mm across, inner series longer, about 7.5 x 4.5 mm across, petals 6 in 2 series, imbricate, obovate, apex obtuse or rounded, about 7-8 x 5-6 mm across, Fruits are several seeded berries, subglobose or ellipsoid, glabrous, red when ripe, about 10-12 x 7-10 mm across, style short or absent. Seeds many.
