Spiny deciduous shrub, about 2-3 m tall. Stem finely sulcate, subterete or subangled, reddish brown, glabrous, internodes short, about 2-2.5 cm long, spines short, 1-3 fid, about 1.5 cm long. Leaves about 2-4 in a node, obovate-oblong, 1-3.5 x 0.5-1.5 cm across, base cuneate, margin entire or rarely with small spinules, apex obtuse with mucronate tip, subcoriaceous, dull grayish green above, paler grayish pruinose beneath, lateral veins 4-5 on either side of the midrib, impressed above, prominently veined on midrib beneath, veinlets reticulate, petiole about 4-6 mm long. Inflorescence umbellate to subumbellate, 3-15 flowered, about 1-4 cm long, peduncles, about 0.5-1 cm long. Flowers bisexual, yellow, about 6-10 mm across, pedicels stout, about 10-15 mm long, prophylls ovate-oblong, about 1.5 x 1 mm long, sepals 6, in 2 series, outer series smallest and inner series largest, outer series sepals, ovate, apex obtuse, about 2.5-3 x 1.25-1.75 mm across, inner series sepals, obovate, apex obtuse, about 5 x 3 mm across, petals obovate or oblong, base cuneate with submarginal glands, margin entire, apex obtuse, about 5.5 x 3 mm across. Stamens truncate at apex, about 4 mm long, ovary simple, oblong, ovules 3. Fruits are several seeded berries, obovoid-subglobose, pruinose, blackish purple when ripe, about 8-10 x 6-9 mm across, style very short or estylose, seeds about 6 mm long.

Undergrowth in dry temperate Pinus forests, altitude of about 2100-3000 m.
