Large, erect tree at Sawri Falls, Netravali, Goa. The inflorescence was huge, may be more than a meter. This tree was too far and was almost inaccessible. Hence all the photographs are zoomed snaps.
Bot. name: Pajanelia longifolia
Family: Bignoniaceae
Thanks to … for providing the ID.

Very nice find of an uncommon tree.
When I was reading about the native Bignoniaceae plants in Maharashtra the first listed in the key was this. I haven’t heard about it earlier. Thanks for all those who have posted the pictures.
What is interesting is
——Such a large inflorescence which is high up at the apex of the tree.
——Flower is very big.
——The leaf is big with many pairs of big leaflets.

——I have not seen the picture with character in the key i.e. Capsule which is 30-50cm straight. compressed with hyaline wings on both sides.

Pajanelia longifolia (Willd.) K. Schum
Synonyms: Bignonia longifolia Willd.
Pajanelia rheedei Wt.
Photographed in Feb, Mar, Apr 2012 from Northeast of Trivandrum city at the foot of the Western Ghats, elevation less than 30m above msl. Growing wild. Couldn’t get photographs of the inflorescence. Only a couple of fallen flowers.
A tall deciduous tree with compound leaves, imparipinnate, about 120cm long.
Flowers are large in panicles. Purple outside, cream inside.
Fruit is a large, narrowly oblong, compressed, winged capsule.
Seeds with membranous wings.

… the pictures of Pajenalia flowers are very rare on internet (in my search – almost none – except one at Biotik).

Many thanks for sharing these pictures – the flowers are simply wonderful.
And then the seeds, pods – fantastic photo set !

Its rare to find the tree in flowering/fruiting. Thanks … for sharing the complete set of pictures.

Thank you very much … for your appreciation.
I didn’t know that pictures of this plant are rare on the internet.
The tree is fairly common from where I photographed this plant.

It is primarily used as a standard for pepper vines here. The winged seeds get dispersed far and wide and seedlings are not rare. Sambar deer seem to have a particular liking to this tree. Almost every big tree in the compound where I took these photographs have been used as ‘scent posts’ by stags, rubbing off its bark.
I will be on the look out and hopefully get better photographs of the inflorescence.

The inflorescence at times is more than 1 m tall. It is at top of a tall tree of about 30 m height. Besides, the flowers bloom at night and fade/fall by morning. The locations are remote and hard to reach. In all, photographing these flowers is a challenge. Attaching a picture taken in Goa with a lot of difficulties.

Beautiful photographs … This tree is mentioned in the BSI Flora of Mah. but I haven’t seen anybody from Maharashtra posting it on the group. … have seen it near Goa/Netravali.
What I was looking for is the pod character….Two wings on both sides/edges of a straight long pod. I do not know of any Bignoniaceae with such winged pods.
These are nicely seen in your picture!

More pictures of Pajanelia longifolia from Trivandrum: (12 pictures)
Here are some more pictures of Pajanelia longifolia taken recently from northwest of Trivandrum city.

I managed to get some photographs of the inflorescence. These pictures were taken on 2,3 and 4th February 2013.
The pictures of the open flowers were taken between 8 and 10 in the morning. Some of the flowers dropped just minutes after I had photographed them.
Thank you … for pointing out that these flowers bloom at night. I hadn’t noticed it before.
Since I don’t have a tele lens I could get only some zoomed images. There were bees buzzing around the flowers. Obviously the pollination have to take place early morning before the flowers drop.
Thanks once again for all friends who appreciated my earlier posting of the same plant during Bignoniaceae week.

what a complete set pf nice pics, appreciate it

Nepali: टटलो tatalo (correct : टटेलो Tatelo) is Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz.

You must be correct about टटेलो Tatelo being Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz. in Nepal as well many other places where Nepali is spoken.
However in Flora of Assam Vol III by U N Kanjilal, P C Kanjilal, A Das, R N De, the authors have listed the name for Pajanelia longifolia (Willd.) K.Schum. … Some Nepali speaking people or communities in regions of Assam use the same name for Pajanelia longifolia (Willd.) K.Schum.and the name listed is totalo owing to the influence of Assamese accent I assume.

In fact there is no Nepali name so far since it has got no distribution in Nepal !

Nice photo and excellent work dear …
One name ആഴാന്ത need to be corrected, is it ആഴാന്ത in Malayalam, the correct English spelling is aazhantha, otherwise it is aalaantha, the correct Malayalam spelling is ആലാന്ത, ie. ഴ – zha and laa – ലാ.  One this kind growing in my property and we calling it as പയ്യാനി payyaani.

Thanks very much, …, for validating the Malayalam names, and for the appreciation.
The Malayalam name I find at http://www.biotik.org/india/species/p/pajalong/pajalong_ma.html is ആഴാന്ത … thus, I will correct the English spelling to aazhantha.
Will correct the English spelling shortly.
