Dec 2011

Sharing pictures of Aechmea gamosepala flowering at my place at Pune

Family: Bromeliaceae (Pineapple family)

Common name: Match Stick Plant, Gamos Bromeliad
A electric blue and bright pink flower spike with bracts resembling matchsticks and red sepals
On the net I found descriptions about the flower spike
but the pictures of my plant show a distinct red flower at the top. What is this flower when all other flowers are blue?

Yes good shots of the Matchstick plant.

The flower looks like match stick …. very cute looking

Pic taken in Bangalore 29/07/12 at 5pm.

how pretty… at your home? can one buy this?

yes this is a very pretty plant – growing in a pot in the building compound. I think this has been brought from Coorg. Have yet to see this in a Bangalore nursery tho’ !

I have seen this flower on picture only and willing to have it in my garden. But knew nobody who can tell me how I can have it. In Kolkata, I never seen it in my known nurseries. Can you please tell me how I can have one?

This is very common in Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai in their plant nursery.
Easily available.

Here is my picture with the open flowers.
I hope it helps.

I have already mentioned that it is at Jijamata Udyan, which is a botanical garden in Mumbai which probably comes under the Muncipal Corporation.
They are not so advanced as having their website, where you can order plants online.yourself.
The only way is to visit their nursery and get it.

here is their telephone no. : 022 2374 2162

The address is :
Victoria Gardens (Veermata Jijabhai Bhosle Udyan)
Dr. Ambedkar Road
Near Byculla Station,
Mumbai – 400 027.
It is just opposite the Byculla Railway Station.

I would like some help identifying a potted plant that I spotted in Ooty.
Date/Time- Aug 2014
Location- Place, Altitude, GPS- Ooty, 2200m asl
Habitat- Garden / urban
Plant Habit- Not sure
Height/Length- Leave 1 foot, stem and flowers 1-2 ft

often cultivated in tropical gardens for its foliage, the unusual flowers are a boon.
Its the matchstick flower… wish pic was not so hazy of the flower spike.
binomial: Aechmea gamosepala of Bromeliaceae Family
I know sometimes it cant be helped but have hazy pics esp if using a handheld point and shoot or a cell phone and there is breeze or if I am in a hurry (in a forest or on a hike, trying to stay with the group) …, but in this case it was a captive subject, growing in a tub. I find if I am using a point and shoot, moving my own hands a bit back and forth may get the subject in focus. Hope it helps.
