In a very interesting paper on this plant, Dheeraj Singh & Ranjit Singh have indicated that being an excellent “climate change indicator” in the dry parts of Western India, “Kair will be fully laden with flowers and fruits if there are drought and high temperatures, whereas in the case of a good monsoon, it bears only average flowers and fruits … It seems paradoxical that plants should produce flowers and fruits during the driest period when there is maximum water stress. But a close inspection will reveal that this is an important adaptation for continuity of the populations. By producing flowers about 1-2 months before the rainy season the species ensures that the seeds are already in the ground when the rainy season begins. The plant can afford this behaviour because of its ability to draw moisture from deeper soil layers.”

Request Identification: I am very happy to find this group on net. My main objective to learn more than to tell something new. I have been trying to identify this shrub for a long while. It used to be in abundance near my native place at Manegaon, Dist: Buldhana, Maharashtra. I have not seen this plant somewhere else.
This plant does not have leaves. It is all sticks. The photos are taken in flowering season, May 2011. The fruits are berry-like and contain many seeds. I’ve heard people make pickle of the fruits, but never seen someone actually making it (local people don’t make pickle). Fruits turn pinkish after ripening. The taste somewhat “tikha” plus sweet. Can someone identify this? Is any additional information needed?

The plant looks like Capparis decidua http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capparis_decidua

This is Capparis decidua/Capparis aphylla.
As the name suggests you will not find leaves.
Local Marathi name : Nepti

This is Capparis aphylla as identified by … local name Punjab, Haryana: Karir

I am quite relieved to know this is a common plant and found over a vast habitat from Africa to Rajasthan. The area where I took these pictures would be under dam water forever in a few years.

Capparis decidua from Kachchh:

Sharing some pictures of a Kair tree [Capparis decidua] from East Kachchh. Usually, it is very common as a spiny bush in the dry region of Vagad, East Kachchh.
Had clicked these pictures on the 3rd of August, 2012 while wayfaring through Suvai, East Kachchh. The rains have eluded Kachchh this year but Kair was flowering and fruiting with impelling vigour, I suppose this can be attributed to the amazing survival strategies of this xerophyte in the extreme conditions of an arid biotope.
Capparis desidua : 22102012 : RV:
I would like to share this picture of Capparis desidua taken in Tal Chappar Wildlife Sanctuary in Churu dist of Rajasthan which is famous for Black Bucks found in large number there.
This particular big shrub of Capparis desidua was profusely flowering on the periphery of the Sanctuary and many Black Bucks were eating something from this shrub……unfortunately I did not get the clear picture as it was far away. Since the leaves are very tiny and fall off very soon, they may be eating the flowers….I am not sure.

Nice photographs ! It is called Capparis decidua [not desidua]. Some of my photographs are available at this link
