The leaves were 4 to 6″ length, leathery and deeply veined,, and flowers buds were almost 4″.
The sepals were distinctive for being fleshy, recurved and tinted red, so could be an Argyreia. ?

Do you happen to have any frontal views of the flower ?
The plant could be a Convolvulaceae but seeing the frontal view of the flower would be helpful and of course fruit is always helpful.
Please try to take some additional views if at all possible if time and location permit.

I will look again, hopefully the plants would not have been cleared away by then.

The earlier images were kindly identified by communication from Dr G Staples ( Nov 2012) based on sepals and types specimen at Kew as Argyreia cymosa (Roxb) Sweet.

Last week (January 2013) I could find the evening blooming flowers, which are shown below.
This gorgeous plant, growing wild near an old well., is unbelievably, again from semi-rural areas of hot, hotter Chennai
