The flower and leaves are consistent for Ipomoea cairica and although the sepals are not quite in focus , they are also (from what I can see) seem to be consistent for Ipomoea cairica.

Flower ID Request 20120619-AM: I have attached two crops of pics of a flower and its plant that I took on Saturday. The following information is available:

Location- Malawli Village near Pune located at an altitude of about 620 metres.
Habitat- Wild Plant Habit- Appeared to be a large Shrub Height- Around 2 metres Leaves- Slender Flowers Size- 2.5 to 3 inches Colour – Light Purple Please excuse the pic for leaf size comparison as it was windy and I could not focus well enough. Please let me know what flower it could be. As an aside, can anyone here please put me in touch with a zoologist, especially someone who has knowledge about crustaceans? Or can someone direct me to an appropriate forum? I have clicked a few pics of land crabs found near Lohagad Fort in Pune that I would like to be identified. Help on the crab IDs would be great!
this is Ipomoea palmata. railway creeper … was not aware of Ipomoea palmata … would have confused this plant with the regular Ipomoea cairica.

Leaves: Palmatly divided in 7 lobes. Overall 3cm x 2.5 cm, lobes elliptic-lanceolate, acute, glabrous. leaves are very similar to Ipomoea cairica
Flowers: White in axillary cymes, 5.5 to 6 cm long, sepals 5, ovate, glabrous. Merremia quinqufolia Sorry. I ignored size of 5 cm. This is I. cairica alright. Flowers are often white. Thank you for the id. The snow white flowers without even a tinge of purple actually put me off the track.

One of the commonest yet most useful of the evergreen creepers, refreshing the eve in the hottest weather with its clear, green leaves and delicate, mauve blooms, the Railway Creeper is found in gardens, villages, and on practically every railway station, thus earning for itself its nickname.
This morning glory vine is beautiful, climbing on to whatever it finds – the purple flower studded vine wrapped around bending bamboo stems, is a pleasing sight.
Its stem is hairless, readily set roots when in touch with the earth. This species can be identified by its leaves which are hairless to 9cm long with 5-7 lobes, middle lobe the largest. Flowers purple, pink or rarely pinkish white, to 8cm across, solitary or in groups of 2-3. Fruit a 4-valved capsule, about 1cm across, each valve with 1 seed. Seed with wispy hairs attached. Spread by wind, water and humans.

Convolvulaceae week: RVS3: Ipomoea cairica: Ipomoea cairica, from Bangalore… Often called as Railway creeper as it is seen growing along Railway lines esp near Mumbai.
“I have often noticed that the the 2 basal lobes of the palmately divided leaf often have an additional partial lobe just like an appendage only in some leaves of the climber.”
The structures you noticed occur on many multi-lobed Convolvulacea species and it is something that I watch for and have even selected for in my personal collection.
