Stout tall perennials; rhizome creeping, thick, clothed with fibrous scaly leaves; culms 90-120 cm high, 3-angled, woody; base pinkish. Sheath, brownish. Umbel 10-15 x 8-10 cm, compound; bracts 3, to 20 x 0.6 cm; rays 7-8; secondary rays shorter. Spikes 6-7 cm long, broadly ovate; rachis filiform, with 8-10 spikelets. Spikelets 4 x 0.2 cm, linear, 20-40-flowered; glumes 4 x 1.5 mm, oblong, acute, 1-nerved, keeled, red; anthers 2 mm long. Nut 1 mm long, linear-oblong, brown.
