Photographed at matheran in panorama point trail on 30th June, 2009.

Seems to be Fibristylis sp.

Nice pictures- but not good enough for id of this family.
It looks like a Cyperaceae member. so sticking to my earlier opinion – further identification of this family should not be done from a photograph.

this has to be Juncus!!

A wild search on the net led me nearest to Rhynchospora colorata, minus the subtending leaves with white bases; any near relative reported from the area?

The plant is lying unidentified even on FlowersofIndian website. I wish the people who have access to Matheran in panorma point trail should visit (or send students), seek this beautiful plant and try to identify the specimens of this plant. It is a real challenge for the experts from the surrounding areas.

This may be Fimbristylis spp. of Cyperaceae.

Fimbristylis lawiana (Boeckeler) J, Kern of Cyperaceae

The most surfaced flower in ITP and FOI web portals…….Trying to find out the answer from anyone, who knows abt it…..Can’t forget June 30th of 2009 at about 08.30 AM when I first photographed this flower…. it still chases me like a ghost…would chase me, till i get it IDed. Can’t wait for next monsoon, when i would visit Matheran (near Mumbai) again in 2010 same date and same time, to get this flower plucked and show it to seniors in Mumbai/Pune.

I am not so lucky to have seen this plant, but the day I saw this plant unidentified on Flowers of India website, I fell in love with the plant. Initially I thought it wont’t be long before this plant is identified, and even threw a sort of challenge to botanists from that area in one of my mails. I am too eager to know the name of this plant as you are. Let us hope someone cracks that riddle. How about a special prize for that person in our proposed meet in September-October 2010?. Guy would really deserve that.

Definitely he/she would be awarded…let’s see what the organizing core team says.

Assuming that this is an annual herb with linear leaves crowded near base, stem less than 15 cm long then this plant is Fimbristylis of Cyperaceae. (I recollect having conveyed this to you directly) Further ID of sp. will be accurate only with a specimen but in the present circumstances we assume that stamens and stigmas were 3 each and style is 2.5 mm long then this is F. lawiana (Boeck) Kern. I have made further assumtions because I have seen/photographed this plant in similar area and in the same season, but only a specimen would confirm
these characters. I hope this relieves you of the ghost, I carry
hundreds of them.

Thanks for providing some leads, but I could not find any image on the internet. Let us wish this is the first one, till then the ghost still remains not only for … but even for me for the sheer beauty of the belonging to otherwise insignificant family.

My further scrutiny of Fimbristylis lawiana gave me Scirpus lawianus Boeck (basionym), Trichelostylis digitata Dalzell ex Boeck and Fimbristylis digitata Boeck as its synonyms. I went through the description of F. digitata in FBI vol 6, page 648.
It goes like this: Glabrous, Stems 2-5 in., bristle-like base bulbous, leaves as long as 1/2 stem, bristle-like; bracts 2-1, shorter than head; spikelets 3-8, 1/4-1/2 by 1/12-1/8 in, 6-18 fld, straw-colrd. in a subterminal head glumes ovate-oblong, scarcely acute, keeled, chaffy, nearly 1-colrd. style 3-fid, nearly as long as nut, glabrous, deciduous with small pyramidal style-base, branches linear; nut obovoid smooth straw colrd. finally brownish, as long as 1/2 glume, sessile, round-trigonous, obtuse at tip.
I wonder if our plant is F. lawiana, how could the white colour of spikes and styles was ignored by original authors. Also the leaves seem to be much broader and not bristle-like.
Let us continue our struggle with this plant.

Agree with …, F. lawiana (Boeck) Kern.

Finally some light on it Trachelostylis lawiana (Fimbristylis lawiana):

Thankfully … confirmed this to be Trachelostylis lawiana (earlier Fimbristylis lawiana) of Cyperaceae family. As per IUCN website (which has … note on it http://www.iucnredlist.org/apps/redlist/details/177328/0) this is least concerned species.
This can be updated on FoI website as well. (http://www.flowersofindia.Unidentified/RS01.html)

I could not find any match either for Trachelostylis lawiana or for Trachelostylis.
Could you pl. give the correct spellings ?

A reply from another thread:

Actually i guess in 1878, Boekler retained only a single species under true circumscription of Letisb. and merged all species of Nees under Fimbristylis Vahl.

Trachelostylis lawiana

Cyperaceae
¿ Fimbristylis lawiana ?
Place, Altitude: Vaghbil, Thane … about 50 ft asl
Date, Time: 05 JUL 09 … 04:35pm
Habitat: green cover during monsoon
Habit: low erect herb; standing about 4 – 8 inches high; flower about 5 – 7 mm across
The flower stalk seems to stem right from the moist earth, there are few linear leaves next to it.
at Vaghbil, Thane on 26 JUL 09

I think matches with images at Trichelostylis lawiana (Boeckeler) M.R.Almeida

Looks like Fimbristylis lawiana in early stage of flowering.

Yesterday i had been to CBD Belapur hills (Navi Mumbai) where i came across this grass sp. Looks like Fibristylis sp. of Cyperaceae. Immediately like Haunting melodies, i remembered … last years posting of more or less similar herb from Matheran hills.
Also remembered … words on not to attempt identification of this sp. based on photographs. Thought of sharing these photographs but would not insist on identification.
Presently this herb is flowering profusely on the CBD hill top.

… My blog scheduled my upcoming visit to Matheran on exact 30th June, 2010 to photograph this herb at panorama point. But since the same is photographed in Mumbai, I shall pay the visit to CBD Belapur Hills and may take the GPS coordinates from yo during the telecon.

Fibristylis for sure do you have the photos of the leaves and stem closely it will help to decipher the species

Fimbristylis lawiana as per images herein.

This grass was seen in by the roadside in the Tamhini ghat near Pune, MH in Aug 2019.
Would be very happy to get even a genus level ID from this lone pic, if possible.

Juncus sp. ?? Please check Juncus !

Please check Fimbristylis lawiana

Thanks …, it does look like it.
