A wild search on the net led me nearest to Rhynchospora colorata, minus the subtending leaves with white bases; any near relative reported from the area? The plant is lying unidentified even on FlowersofIndian website. I wish the people who have access to Matheran in panorma point trail should visit (or send students), seek this beautiful plant and try to identify the specimens of this plant. It is a real challenge for the experts from the surrounding areas. This may be Fimbristylis spp. of Cyperaceae. Fimbristylis lawiana (Boeckeler) J, Kern of Cyperaceae The most surfaced flower in ITP and FOI web portals…….Trying to find out the answer from anyone, who knows abt it…..Can’t forget June 30th of 2009 at about 08.30 AM when I first photographed this flower…. it still chases me like a ghost…would chase me, till i get it IDed. Can’t wait for next monsoon, when i would visit Matheran (near Mumbai) again in 2010 same date and same time, to get this flower plucked and show it to seniors in Mumbai/Pune.
I am not so lucky to have seen this plant, but the day I saw this plant unidentified on Flowers of India website, I fell in love with the plant. Initially I thought it wont’t be long before this plant is identified, and even threw a sort of challenge to botanists from that area in one of my mails. I am too eager to know the name of this plant as you are. Let us hope someone cracks that riddle. How about a special prize for that person in our proposed meet in September-October 2010?. Guy would really deserve that.
Definitely he/she would be awarded…let’s see what the organizing core team says. Assuming that this is an annual herb with linear leaves crowded near base, stem less than 15 cm long then this plant is Fimbristylis of Cyperaceae. (I recollect having conveyed this to you directly) Further ID of sp. will be accurate only with a specimen but in the present circumstances we assume that stamens and stigmas were 3 each and style is 2.5 mm long then this is F. lawiana (Boeck) Kern. I have made further assumtions because I have seen/photographed this plant in similar area and in the same season, but only a specimen would confirm Thanks for providing some leads, but I could not find any image on the internet. Let us wish this is the first one, till then the ghost still remains not only for … but even for me for the sheer beauty of the belonging to otherwise insignificant family. My further scrutiny of Fimbristylis lawiana gave me Scirpus lawianus Boeck (basionym), Trichelostylis digitata Dalzell ex Boeck and Fimbristylis digitata Boeck as its synonyms. I went through the description of F. digitata in FBI vol 6, page 648.
It goes like this: Glabrous, Stems 2-5 in., bristle-like base bulbous, leaves as long as 1/2 stem, bristle-like; bracts 2-1, shorter than head; spikelets 3-8, 1/4-1/2 by 1/12-1/8 in, 6-18 fld, straw-colrd. in a subterminal head glumes ovate-oblong, scarcely acute, keeled, chaffy, nearly 1-colrd. style 3-fid, nearly as long as nut, glabrous, deciduous with small pyramidal style-base, branches linear; nut obovoid smooth straw colrd. finally brownish, as long as 1/2 glume, sessile, round-trigonous, obtuse at tip.
I wonder if our plant is F. lawiana, how could the white colour of spikes and styles was ignored by original authors. Also the leaves seem to be much broader and not bristle-like.
Let us continue our struggle with this plant. Agree with …, F. lawiana (Boeck) Kern. identification no200911sn1: This has been identified as a Cyperaceae, but the species has not been identified. I am adding some more pics for identification. date/time:aug11

yes me also tried to find this name on internet but could not get it, since its new name combination made by Almeida sir publish only in Maharashtra flora. its photo plate is available in Flora of Maharashtra in Vol-5 “ Actually i guess in 1878, Boekler retained only a single species under true circumscription of Letisb. and merged all species of Nees under Fimbristylis Vahl.
