ID request – 05072011PC1: Please identify this common shade plant. Shrub and succulent. Portulacaria afra Native of South Africa. In nature can grow tall to 10-12 feet. Family : Portulacaceae. I know this plant as dawrf / miniature Jade plant.. NOT RELATED BOTANICALLY to the “real” jade plant… Both make nice Bonsai habits, there in lies the rub… confusion… but look closely and the differential diagnosis is not so difficult… the bark is distinctly different and internodes etc etc… And if you the flowers once will never forget them… Crassula ovata puts on a spectacular show of masses of white flowers on green peduncles and the Portulacaria afra gets sparse small pink flowers on pink peduncles .

So if you /// your lab had this portulaca afra near by its sap would have come in handy… god has created problems and given us antidotes too.. it never ceases to amaze me when I find such pairing in botany

This could be the variegated variety? this is variegated jade. a crassula. Not the portulaca the lightness is extreme variegation in the albinsation of the leaflets. Its not uncommon in succulents to go haywire in the lack of color google it and you will see many many extreme variegation in all kinds of succulents. TO DIFFERENTIATE between true variegation and grafting one needs full side view of the houseplant Any connection ??? Yes.
