?Dipterocarpus sp. – ID confirmation: Attaching photos of flowers of the tree from which the winged seeds posted earlier come from. … kindly suggested Dipterocarpus turbinatus as the ID. I looked it up and found that this species is critically endangered in the IUCN Red List. I would like to know the exact species name.

Winged Seed ID help:  We have a few tall trees with these seeds which come twirling down when they are ripe. The flowers are white with pink stripes.

It reminds about another Dipterocarpaceae member Shorea. Please see attached Ecoport pictures.


Shorea I think usually has 3 wings (now five with the merger of Parashorea)
Your plant has 5 wings, which should be Parashorea stellata Kurz, now correctly known as Shorea stellata (Kurz) Dyer
The plant uploaded by … has two wings, characteristic of Dipterocarpus (fruiting calx free from ovary; stipules large) and Anisoptera (fruiting calyx adnate to fruit; stipules small).

I have attached a photo of Gyrocarpus asiaticus? to some extent the winged seeds are look like of D. t. !


Considering the image with leaves that is available online by the same person (…) who posted this picture, this is most probably Dipterocarpus turbinatus. More details would be helpful for further clarification.
