Leaves- Leaves usually alternate, spiral, sometimes subopposite; stipules subulate, caducous; petiole 0.5-2.5 cm long, canaliculate, stellate scaly; lamina 7-18 x 1.8-4.5 cm, narrow elliptic-oblong to lanceolate, apex narrowly long acuminate, base acute, margin entire, chartaceous, densely silvery stellate scaly beneath; stipitate glands 1-2 pairs at the junction of petiole and lamina; secondary nerves 5-10 pairs, lower most pair opposite and acute in angle; tertiary nerves broadly percurrent.
Inflorescence / Flower- Inflorescence in terminal racemes, clothed with silvery scales; flowers unisexual, monoecious.
Fruit and Seed- Capsule ovoid-oblong, slightly 3-lobed, reddish-brown stellate; seeds 3.
Undergrowth in evergreen forests up to 1500 m.
Western Ghats and Sri Lanka; in the Western Ghats- occasional in South and Central Sahyadris.

26th December 2014 Male and female flowers clicked from two different plants that were part of the same colony in the same area. Habit: Shrub Most probably Croton zeylanicus.

Here is another photo: Attachments (1) The opposite leaves (sometimes), the stipitate basilaminar glands of leaves together with stellate hairs on the upper surface and the lepidote scales on the inflorescenc axis and capsules are characteristic of Croton zeylanicus.

I was indeed able to recognize the plant in various other locations during the trip due to the lepidote scales you mentioned peeling away when touched.
