yes, poinsettia, given as gifts on christmas in north american countries… comes in 40 cultivars… different colors and branching patterns and maturity dates that can be suited for all the 50 states and canada… are grown…
This spectacular show is thanks to a virus called Phytoplasma….
Poinsett introduced it in 1825 to USA from Mexico, where legend says that the poinsettia became associated with Christmas because the Mexicans regarded it as symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem, after the jesuit priests had been  preaching and converting natives in Mexico in the 17th and 18th century…

strangely it is called “Flor de Pascua“, = “Easter flower” in spanish.
On the Island of Madeira I saw them growing wild and huge, and red as well as yellow.

no surprise… it grows profusely in Kolkata,
Flower bracts are red in Feb thru august or so, monsoon sees the red color reduced…
the picture enclosed was taken in Murshidabad Museum grounds in April 2011
Have seen them grow profusely upon establishing roots from the xmas plant …
in Southearten USA backyards… I had many…  only thing they needed in the garden was atleast two months of total darkness… not street lights stealing in… if it did…no flowers…

Many Meanings of Pascua
The Spanish word for Easter, Pascua, which is usually capitalized, did not always refer to the Christian holy day commemorating the Resurrection of Christ. The word predates Christianity and originally refers to a holy day of the ancient Hebrews. And these days, in context, it can refer to religious holidays other than Easter, even Christmas.
In addition to holidays, the word Pascua can also be used in common Spanish idiomatic expressions, like the English expression, “once in a blue moon,” translated into Spanish as, de Pascuas a Ramos

Again these pictures of Euphorbia species taken at the same plant nursery.

Kindly confirm id.

Some cultivars of Poinsettia {Euphorbia pulcherrima].

Yes, as … says
ps there are hundreds of cultivars in trade…. thin narrow leaves, braoder shorter leaves… leaves of many
colors… bracts that open in middle of summer as in august or in time for christmas etc etc….

commonly known as poinsettia fireball (dwarf)

very beautiful capture …
In the first pic I can see maharashrian rangoli (Laxminchi pavale) very nicely drawn and colored and two triangular tips probably of chandani. I like our paramparik rangolis very much. This has really added something unique to the feel of the pictures

The pots were kept near the sales counter of the nursery, thats how you can see the Rangoli.
I took these pictures & went for a round in the nursery, by the time I returned, the pot with red flowers was already gone…I mean sold.
Another picture of a flower I was trying to click, I think Gazania…a lady came & picked up the pot right in front of my eyes and I was left holding the camera! No picture!

The beautiful red bracts appear during the winter.

did you just buy it as such… or has been growing all summer in your balcony and just turned red?

I bought it as a small plant three years back from a nursery. Yes the red bracts appear just when the winter starts and by the Christmas time all the bracts are bigger and more red and the plant looks very beautiful. The bracts will be there till March and then all be fell down. I just gave a light pruning in March and the plant become tall with green leaves. No synthetic fertilisers, just cow dung and worm tea for its growth.

That’s impressive… that it “flowers” in a balcony…
Now I need advice:
when you say cow patty… is that the dried stuff? or manured form , and how much per pot… how much does it reek of its nature? and Worm manure tea: how is it done in India and how much do you put in and how often…
The questions are because… am a bit confused about the “natural” stuff used here … seems what I get at the local nurseries… in powdered form may not be all that they say it does…

Cow dung we get here in the dried form. Two handful each pot every three months. Worm tea I prepare myself. I got a worm bin from which I get the worm castings (worm manure) which I mix two handfuls for 1 litre of water and spray on the leaves every week and the remaining tea I put in the soil. It is a good tonic as well as organic pesticide. The plus point is that there is no side effects and no smell as in fish meals etc.

The poinsettia’s species name pulcherrima means “most beautiful” and that it is!
Euphorbia pulcherrima is named after Dr. J.R. Poinsett, and was introduced to gardeners in the early 19th century.
The species is a tall, rangy shrub that grows to a height of 10 ft.
It has large, dark green, oval leaves that are “toothed” on the sides and pointed at the tips. They emerge from smooth green erect stems. Flowers are borne at the stem tips in winter. The actual flowers are quite small (they are the yellow structures at the center of the brilliantly colored “bracts”) The bracts are actually modified leaves – in the species there usually are 8 to 10 bracts that are 4-7 in long

Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Klotzsch (Poinsettia ; Family Euphorbiaceae)
The poinsettia is native to Mexico.
The colored bracts—which are most often flaming red but can be orange, pale green, cream, pink, white or marbled—are often mistaken for flower petals because of their groupings and colors, but are actually leaves.
