ID requested DSC4032: The seeds are of a creeper which has nearly dried. The green leaves are of the host plant. – There is a difference between CREEPER and a CLIMBER. This is for sure a climber, because Creepers cant climb!!! – Abrus precatorius Linn : (Local name–Chirmi, Family–Fabaceae).
Gunj for ID : 050511 : AK-2: Taken at Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Abrus precatorius (white seeded) Also I have seen green (with white) seeds of this. Is mutation responsible for this production of varied colored seeds or any cross-over? I never knew this plant is poisonous. In Tamil, it is called ‘Pilliyar kannu’ which transliterates into ‘Eye of L.Ganesha’; used for pressing eyes in clay idols. In spite of being highly poisonous the seeds had been used for weights (Rati), and also for making rosaries. The seeds are not dangerous as long as the hard seedcoat is intact, but especially when they are drilled to be used in rosaries they are highly dangerous and can be fatal if ingested. Yes there are white varieties… I have seen photoged and collected white seeds of these… as curiosity in a hot house in NY, and at a students learning garden of an Ayruvedic college in India… local village gardeners said its used for doing magic… they seemed to be all afraid of the seeds…. I have seen only four colour-forms of Abrus precatorius seeds. But local nati-vaidhyas in TN say there is a green form which is said to be very rare and most efficacious among all. It shows the properties of herbs not name and in ancient Indian literature there are plus 18 plants mentioned under category of मधुयष्टिका and in category raktika, tens of plants are there.
The red shiny seeds with characteristic black spot is unforgettable. The leaves are ingredient of Paan, but I believe the seeds are poisonous. Yes, the seeds are known to be poisonous, though the leaves are one of the main ingredients of paan.
Also discussed in earlier posts, is the use of रती rati seeds by goldsmiths in the past as unit of weight.

KOONCH (কুঁচ) in Bengali + butterfly + teal found at the same place Very beautiful pictures. The butterfly in picture is Pioneer – Belenois aurota. The mating pair is just resting on the plant. Abrus precatorius aka the Crab eyed creeper is called ‘Goonj’ गुञ्ज in Marathi. It is larval host plant of Indian Sunbeam and Common Cerulean butterflies….. their larva are attended by ants. Thanks … for the interesting information.
The plant butterfly interactions are really interesting. I hope the larval host plants for Pioneer butterflies are from Capparaceae family. The Pioneer indeed does lay eggs on Capparaceae members like C.rheedi, C.sepiaria, C.spinosa, C.zelyanica, Cadaba fruicosa and Maerua oblongifolia…… Certainly there were many Capparis spiaria and C. zeylanica in that place. Thank you once again. The birds in the last shot are Lesser whistling Ducks.

Abrus precatorius L. (Fabaceae) is a common climber in entire India and its seeds when mature, are beautiful. It is known by names like ‘Ratti’, ‘Ratigiri’, ‘Rattidani’ in Uttarakhand.

Pls help in ID of this undershrub 1 m tall, found in deciduous forest near Pune.
Leaves paripinnate. Flowers in terminal racemes 10-15 cm long. In absence of any other pics, Abrus precatorius is the species with which flowers match very closely.. . Abrus precatorius L.: 3 very high res. images. Location: Musikot, Rukum, West Nepal
