As per efi thread : According to Dr. Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’, the pods of D. triangulare are 2 – 2.5 cms. long, slightly curved, indented on both sutures, more deeply on the lower one, joints 3 – 6, as broad as long, slightly pubescent. Whereas in D. umbellatum the pods are 4 – 5 cms. long, sparsely silky when young, glabrous when ripe, thick and coriaceous, almost turgid, not reticulately veined, indented on both sutures, joints 4 = 5 [usually 4], 8-6 cm [?] Here’s something from Dr Almeida’s Fl of Maharashtra which describes the plant in the image very clearly:
Desmodium triangulare (Retz.) Merrill, Flowers ” 20 or more crowded in dense axillary peduncled umbellate heads, peduncles 3-4 mm long”…. and also from Fl of Mah, the other plant I think you are talking about: Desmodium umbellatum (Linn) DC “Flowers in axillary peduncles 6-12 flowered umbels, peduncles 8-12 mm long”….etc. .

Habitat: Dry to moist deciduous forests this may be Desmodium triangulare (Retz.) Merr., a shrub with white flowers. Yes indeed its Desmodium triangulare (Retz.) Merr. Tree for ID : Pali,Maharashtra : 251112 : AK-2: Missed out the flowering season.
Pictures taken on 23/11/12.
Found the pods very unusual, in bunches. This is Demodium triangulare. Some of my photographs of this are available at these links Missed this link Please also check Dendrolobium umbellatum. Just have second thought. To me it is Dendrolobium umbellatum, the horse bush … locally known as पांढरा चिकटा pandhra chikta. I understand, without flowers, it is a bit confusing. Went through the literature and Dr. Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’. Agree with … & … This is Desmodium umbellatum [previously Dendrolobium umbellatum].
Have plenty of these plants on my property at Shahapur. This was identified by Dr. Almeida & his associate Santosh Yadav on a visit to my property on the 12th of August 2007 as Desmodium triangulare as also stated by me in this correspondence
Presumably their diagnosis was based only on observing the plants, as [from my records over the last few years] flowering occurs in Sept. & Oct., whereas it fruits between Oct. to Dec.
It is therefore likely that Dr. Almeida & Santosh Yadav erred in their diagnosis.
My apologies to all and to … [to whom I am also forwarding this mail].
Sending a few of my photographs. to me it is clearly Desmodium triangulare as first stated by … this is interesting and an eye opener for me. Don’t think so. According to Dr. Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’, the pods of D. triangulare are 2 – 2.5 cms. long, slightly curved, indented on both sutures, more deeply on the lower one, joints 3 – 6, as broad as long, slightly pubescent. Whereas in D. umbellatum the pods are 4 – 5 cms. long, sparsely silky when young, glabrous when ripe, thick and coriaceous, almost turgid, not reticulately veined, indented on both sutures, joints 4 = 5 [usually 4], 8-6 cm [?].
Also whereas D. triangulare is a shrub, D. umbellatum is described as a bushy shrub [ocassionally growing to be a small tree].
Therefore feel that the tree in question here is D. umbellatum. I don’t have access to my pics now as I”m away. Yes …, the pictures on web across many sites (including those showing herbarium) show the leaves markedly different. Here’s something from Dr Almeida’s Fl of Maharashtra which describes the plant in the image very clearly: Please check this post by … Yes, I saw this post. The same plant, with very immature fruit. … the plant in … post is same as posted plant, and what is being discussed here. Cannot miss the characteristic hard-veined leaflets. Your plants too, are same. Thus Dr. Almeida & Santosh Yadav ji are correct in their diagnosis. Fair enough. The only thing that bothers me is the size of the fruit. Maybe … could give us his opinion. Also … may have some photographs to share with us. I enjoyed reading the interesting discussion that ended with a conclusive id. I agree with you all that the pictures posted by … here are of Dendrolobium triangulare. My picture of this species from Manipur shows developing fruits, which as far as I remember, are not longer than an inch. Thanks … and thanks all for a lively discussion. I was bit confuse about D. umbellatum and D. triangulare from the begining. But i agree with the ID of the posted plant by …This is Desmodium triangulare (Retz.) Merr. Dendrolobium umbellatum (L.) Benth.

some views: Oct 2, 2011 … at Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Maharashtra between Oct 4 & Nov 14, 2009 … at Yeoor Hills (part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park) Very nicely illustrated pictures … Dendrobium umbellatum Earlier Desmodium umbellatum
Characters seen here: Terete stem. Leaves trifoliate. Flowers 6-12 white; in axillary umbells. Pods turgid dented on both sutures 4-5 jointed To me it look like Desmodium triangulare and not D. umbellatum…
D. umbellatum leaves are quite different…
Check kew herbarium photos… It is Desmodium triangulare. Herb ID request – RK89 – 9-Jan-2013:
Requesting id of this herb from Tungareshwer. It is around 3 feet tall and is fruiting now. The leaves are trifoliate and the stem seemed to be 3-sided or maybe 4-sided. There was some white woolly infestation (?) on the underside of one of the leaflet.
This is Desmodium triangulare. My photographs of this are available in the archives of this group. The white part under the leaf seems to be the cluster of Mealy Bugs. Sorry was in a hurry so did not view the last few slides or the question. They do not look like Mealy bugs to me. Could be the remnants of a spider’s egg sac. Sending a few photographs. Dendrolobium triangulare (Retz.) Schindl. (=Desmodium triangulare) as per The Plant List 2010. Thanks a lot … for the quick identification and the pictures of the mealy bug, they are fantastic. .
